been looking at what my options would be with 3 guys for long hike in trips. would prefer the stove so I don't know if the sawtooth would be big enough. been looking at all the 6 man tipis and wondering what everyone else would use for this type of hunt. is the sl5 big enough or another conventional tent with a stove jack sewn in good options?
will be mainly used for aug-oct in the mountains of alberta. most years it isn't too humid in aug or early sept. by late sept and oct its freezing at night. bugs are not a huge deal most years . been using conventional light weight tents but think the switch to a tipi or similar large floorless shelter might be the way to go. gets pretty cold sitting around the fire outside at night and would be nice to have more room on rain out days. would also help keep spirits up when u get back to camp soaking wet if u know your clothes will be dry by first light.

3 guys would be tight in a Sawtooth but doable. We have had 4 and 5 in mine with a medium stove just chilling around the stove, 4 is Okay 5 was a little tight, but sure beat being out in the cold and rain. Would have to be careful if you tried to run the stove with the 3rd bag in the middle. A 6 or 8 man TiPi might be a better choice.

My sl5 is tight for 3 guys 6' to 6'5" but doable. We brought my one man for the packs and other gear since it was a rainy mess in CO this year.

I've got a 6man kifaru tipi. 3 people, wood stove and gear would be a bit of a pain. 2 people stove and gear is. Comfortable.

I would personally go bigger if I was often going to have 3 guys. My 6 man, liner and stove will come in at under 10lbs hopefully pending the arrival of the oval stove I'm waiting on. That's 5 lbs for 2 guys for a heated stand up room shelter. Doable with 3 but it would be tight.

i love reading about Tipi living. and stoves. super cool.

so the "6-man" designation is just a rough suggestion? one day, i might get one..the warm stove is singing the Siren's song.

A 6-man, medium stove and 3 guys with gear, firewood and a yellow lab is fine.
A liner allows you to sleep closer to the walls, but there is ample room for 3. 4 can be done, we did it on the high hunt this year. It's cozy, but still workable.

So a 6 man tipi isn't big enough for "6 Men"? I am not sure I understand the logic behind the name... Just thinking out loud, carry on.. :)

Same as any tent I guess, divide total floor square footage by theoretical space required for one sleeping human. In practice, divide rating in half

Sleeps 6 and 6 LIVING in a tent is NOT the same thing, especially after 4 or 5 days of weather. Made that mistake on a sheep hunt with a Bibler I tent, 2 man tent and with my 300lb partner that made 2 1/2 men. ;)

I have used a 6 man before and I understand all that, but I was just thinking as to why most, if not all tents state "X man" but really only can fit "Y". People backpacking, camping and hunting (covers most uses tent manufactures cater to) that rely on a tent WILL have more than just their body... Right?

Again, just thinking out loud, I will stop now :)

ha, its just me but i wouldnt want to do 2 men and a stove in an SL5! mostly because of the door config..

It was certainly tight. My original plan was to let my buddies sleep in my tipi and I was going to sleep in my 1 man. That all changed with the crap weather we had in Idaho spring bear hunting and CO muzzleloader hunting this year. I've never seen a September like we had in the CO high country this year where I was. The stove sure took the chill off when we'd get back in the dark in our wet gear.

I am hoping to pick up an 8 man before spring.

For 3 people and a stove, I usually use a 6 man and for backcountry it is plenty comfortable IMO. I have done an LBO Base / Tarp / Base as well before and it worked well for a few days as well. A BCS2 in a grande configuration works pretty well as well. I have used an 8 as well, but find it more than needed.

I agree...I think that is where the flexibility of the LBO shines!!! Neat little shelter in how versatile it is!

I just sent Darin a review of the LBO that should be posted here soon, I went through just about every set up and how many people it is comfortable with. 3 and stove is a good option in base/tarp/base but because I own a six man I will likely pick that option most of the time. I like to be able to stand up, but I used the LBO without a stove all summer for scouting trips.

I haven't used the new BCS options yet, I really want to get my hands on it though.

Here is a picture of a six, and the three 6 foot plus guys who slept in it. It was a car scouting trip in early June, looking for the deer in transitional range.
