Maybe I’m missing it like I miss the mustard in the fridge lol, but I’ve searched and looked through all the forum categories, and don’t see the existence of a shed hunting subforum!
I’m curious if there’s a reason for this(was there one once upon a time but people couldn’t act right in it?), and if not, would anyone else have an interest in a shed hunting subforum/yearly thread created? I think for a lot of us it’s a favorite spring time activity and who doesn’t love seeing more bone! The HuntWA forum has one(of course it’s Washington only) but it’s always been one of my favorites to watch. What is everyone’s opinions?

As some of you know, I started shed hunting long before it was cool, Picked up my first shed over fifty years ago and since that time have gathered up one of the better collections in the country.
If we can get our schedules lined up @robby denning and I are to do a podcast in the near future on shed hunting. It is likely that what shed hunting was when I started, what it is now and the ethics of shed hunting is to be part of the discussion.

If you think public land mule deer hunters are whiny… wait until shed hunters get their own sub forum!!

I know, because I do both!

How does one go about training a good dog for shed hunting? Thank you
I started mine out by playing fetch with him with just antlers. He didn’t really get it at first then one day it clicked and he started bringing them back on his own. Where I screwed up was not taking all of them and rewarding him. The crappy ones I would throw around and he would bring them back a couple times but almost got mad when I would keep the nicer ones. Should have been consistent. It also helped that I work in the woods so he was out there everyday with me.

Start them from day one, make it fun and reward based. Any day out with your dog is a good day. Close to 40 years looking for them. Odin is fanatical about antlers.

Thanks Guys! I gotta great new pup, a Large Munsterlander. I got him in the antlers as a pup and will take your advise about keeping him interested in em. I have a large fenced yard that I can plant a few for drills.
Ross thats a fine compantion sir.

We don’t need sub forums for every single little niche topic. This will just end up like Archery talk and others. A million sub forums and no good discussion.

I've taught our chessy to find moose antlers. I use the cut of base of the antlers. There is the scent of the blood n fat in the base. Use them for chew toys. And then use them for playing fetch. Having a retriever that naturally wants to fetch makes it easier I suspect. And having them as a chew toy adds natural incentive for the dog to want more. Or go looking for more. Gotta remember the couple natural things that critters are interested in, food n sex .
I enjoy trying to throw whatever I'm using, usually a stick so that they can't see where it went or is. I enjoy throwing the stick, toy, antler parts in the deep snow. It'll be 4 foot deep and I'll blind throw the toy. The 3 chessapeaks I've had, have will not stop looking for it. Generally the issue is that they find it too fast n keep bugging me to play.
That helped our dogs learn to look at me for direction. Teaching her to retrieve properly is sooooo rewarding for me. Throw the antler, stick, ball or whatever and watching her work the wind. Back n forth, then circling in. Bringing it to me with a proud trot. I'll have Ruby walk behind me n circle to my side sit 20210409_081251.jpgn present. It's how I kinda like to start the day.
I suspect that you n your pup will find your ways. There are a lot of videos as I'm sure you're aware. Take what you think will work but every dog n trainer is different. Your dog will tell you what works best. Watch them closely and interpret.

This is some neat info shared on training dogs to find sheds.. thanks for sharing guys!
And I understand now why there isn’t a shed hunting forum, thanks for the enlightenment lol!
