Hey all,

I'm selling my ruger Hawkeye all weather in 300 win mag and replacing it with a rifle in the same caliber that will allow for some easier aftermarket tweaking in the future.

I have a combination of Cabelas points and gift cards so I will be purchasing the rifle fro cabelas, even if the price is a bit high.

I'll be making this rifle my "longer range" rifle. I will take it hunting, but not on extended backcountry hunts. I have a tikka superlite in 30-06 and a 338-06 (build in process) for that.

What do you guys think about the remington 700 long range rifle? Also thinking about the Weatherby vanguard series 2 accuguard available at Cabelas. Both rifles have stocks with bedding blocks and seem to be set up well. Again, keeping the caliber at 300 win mag since I am set up with ammunition and reloading for it. Open to other options as well.

I'm staying away from a tikka for this rifle as is like to keep it a little heavier. I've already got the lightweight rifle covered.

For your purchases, the 700 long range looks like a good choice. It is definitely heavy, but should shoot decent as is and be a very solid platform to build off in the future. I keep buying other rifles and end up wishing I had bought a Remington 700 instead because of the plethora of aftermarket parts.

I have heard great things about the rem 700LR. Good price and shoots well out of the box. I hear it can be a very good 3/4 moa gun with very little work for very cheap compared to a full custom. As you know the rem 700 is the most popular action out there so all good gunsmiths can work on it and lots of aftermarket parts too.

Another to look at is the Savage 11/111 long range hunter. I have heard very good things about this gun right out of the box. Savage are very popular and reliable guns that most smiths can work on as well.

I have been a long time Savage shooter and fan. I probably won't by another. They are great guns until you want to find aftermarket stocks or accessories. There are so many different versions that it is hard to find a decent stock. The long range hunter is the hardest variation to find accessories for (center feed, detachable mag, bottom bolt release). If you want stock options you need a blind mag and top magazine release. That being said if you are happy with the gun as is, it will probably be a great shooter.

Thanks guys,

I'm following a thread on the long range section about an 800 yd rifle as well. Looks like the long range remington may be a good place to start. I like the description of the Weatherby though.

I have a 700LR chambered in .308 that is nails. I can't claim that I shoot 3/4 MOA on anything but a good bench rest but, for the price, I am not sure of a better option. Just be carefule because, when compared to other rifles, it is HEAVY. I lugged it around everywhere on a Coues hunt recently and the weight was definitely noticed.

I have a Weatherby Vanguard SUB-MOA model that is a few years old, now they call them "Range Certified", and it shoots really well. It came in a B and C stock and comes in right at 9 pounds scoped. ...not sure about aftermarket parts though.

Cabela's has them on sale for $699.99 right now. Just curious, other than price and a fluted barrel in stainless, what's the difference between the Long Range 700 and a Sendero?

I'm not sure. Looks like the sendero is 1/2 lb lighter, different stock. Same barrel length, same twist. I wonder if the senderos action has been fine tuned. I got to hold a sendero today at a sportsmans. I was not a fan of the palm area on the it.

I hope it's tuned. I don't think they can justify $400 more just for stainless and fluting. Good luck to you and please post a range report when you get it. The Sendero and the 700 5R in 300wm have caught my eye but if that Long Range shoots great, why spend the extra money?

What didn't you like about the palm swell?

I am by no means an expert, but it felt "fat" to me. Maybe I'm not used to a tactical stock. They didn't have a rem 700 long range in stock to compare.

I really like the stock and the palm swell area of my Sendero. You just have to lay down behind it and see what you like. The ergos are different for each stock and I have several different brands of rifles and they are each unique.
