OnXmaps

The recent update toasted all my downloaded maps - zero layers. So, I started downloading them all again, probably 20-30 for this season. I gave up on the first one after 20 minutes when it was 5mb/300. I'm on a 5 meg download connection with nothing else running.

Sh** happens, but who pushes out brand new huge updates right as scouting season starts? I was dark during my last trip and it looks to be the same for my next trip.

All I got was a canned reply, no info on what to do, no estimate on when it would be fixed, no notice when the update was ready and now I can't get anything.

I was a huge fan, now I'm looking for something else. Mistakes happen, not keeping customers updated or fixing it well before the season isn't acceptable. I did see they had plenty of time to film promo videos on Newberg's YouTube channel while the paying customers were in the dark.

If it doesn't work by Thursday, I will look for a refund and find another option.

Spend the time on hold to connect with customer service. They've been great to work with. Though I agree the timing of all this sucks.

Just curious, but why are folks downloading so many maps at one time? I actually like that all my waypoints/tracks/lines are there in the "cloud" whether it's the mobile app or the website. In my preparation for a hunt, I will make a few downloads; maybe 2-4 high resolution tiles (5 miles wide) then do 1 or 2 mid or low res tiles to capture the roads and trails getting in there. I look at the saved or offline maps as really just a means to an end in case I'm out of cell coverage, which I usually in the areas I hunt. I guess what I am saying is, I really only need to download the area that I am concentrating on hunting at any given time.

The initial transition (a month or so ago) went fine for me and I saved some offline maps and everything worked great. After the latest update (a week or two ago?), I had the same issue as hunt4meat. The offline maps appeared to be there, but the app crashed as soon as I selected offline mode. They gave me the same response: erase old maps, re-save. I did it and everything seems to work fine now. I just hope this doesn't happen again right before I need to head into the mountains.

Agree with Titan_Bow to a point, although if I want high-res imagery to cover my entire hunting area I need to download 3 tiles, or I can download one at medium res. I would prefer to be able to download everywhere I could possibly go and save them on my SD Card, but the way they designed it they seem to be pushing you into the mode of downloading only what you need for the trip you are currently going on.

I have several different mapping programs and onX is by far the easiest to use.

As far as downloading tiles on a 5Mbps connection; the tiles are 300MB each roughly, so that's 2400Mb which would take 480s or 8 minutes. However it is annoying that you can't queue up multiple downloads and just let it run overnight or something.

5mb is a pretty slow connection these days really. I downloaded the entire northern section of the wilderness area I'm hunting this year, 4 high res tiles and 2 medium tiles, it literally took just a couple minutes in my home wifi

I was able to cue three maps and they downloaded at the same time. That's the first time it's worked. Im still getting one out of five failed downloads though. And 8 minutes seems about right for me too while connected to wifi.

Because I am hunting 3 states away in a place I've never been to and I'm not sure where I will be going over the course of 10 days. I have no idea if there is cell service and I wanted my entire unit.

Last season was my first season hunting Colorado. I hunted about 3 weeks split up in three different units. This year I'll only be in one unit but have a few different backup spots just in case.

Then there's the other hunts I'm doing this year. All public land in three different states. 50 tiles downloaded probably isn't enough.

I just noticed that the 3rd one I tried last night failed. But it won't let me hit the "Save New Map" button while a download is going on.

Yeah, I'm in a hotel. I've downloaded them at least 5 times already over the last several weeks. I'm trying to use them in the field, not spend my precious time at home on the phone fixing their stuff. Every app on my phone works fine except onX.

Regarding downloading, I'm hunting wilderness where I loose cell coverage 20 miles before I got the trailhead. I have 5 tags and I'm not even thinking about the later hunts yet.

It let me save multiple at once. Scary question but have you done the update that came out last week? Forgot if you had or not. If not, I'd do the update before saving any more, you may be in the 5% like me and loose all your maps.

I've also had nothing but problems with the new set up. Lost map, maps failing to load after several tries, lost tracks. I have zero confidence in the app at this point.

The first tile ran for 20 minutes and was not even close to done. Then an error, then I gave up.

Have you called customer service yet? They really have been decent to work with.

I went ahead and added them to my contacts....

I have been in email communication with them, followed all of their suggestions, and still have the same issues trying to load maps. I did get one to load finally, but I would guess it was after 15-20 attempts. I still have zero confidence that it will actually work in the field offline.

What other suggestions do people have for apps that are similar and more reliable? I feel like my time would be better spent looking for a new app instead of continuing to mess with this garbage

I downloaded the app for the first time last night since erasing my phone about a month ago. Makes me wait for one to finish downloading before I can do another.

Are you keeping the app in the foreground the entire time? I just noticed that the reason mine was failing is that I was doing other stuff and they don't have the proper code in to keep the OS from killing the app. I could go into depth on how Android works for apps running in the background, but long story short they didn't do it right.

Is anyone having issues downloading trying on WiFi of your cellular network? I have downloaded a bunch of maps and never had an issue with downloading or the app closing. Am using a Samsung S8 with latest software.

Maybe it's just iPhone users like me.
