OnX offline map question

When you download offline maps for elk hunting, what resolution map do you create? ONX has the option for low/medium/high resolution offline maps. The lower resolution makes the map area larger per megabyte of phone storage ( but obviously less detail). Im thinking of making medium resolution

I usually use the 5 mile maps, highest resolution. If I am headed to a new area I may load a larger one but not typically. I just stack the smaller maps next to each other if I want to cover more area.

I'll usually download a really big low res and then several small high res ones in a more central area. The low res isn't very good if you're wanting to see a lot of detail.

I use high res for greater detail. I have saved over 20 maps without any performance issues on my phone.

I have six low resolution offline maps that cover my entire state and then I download high resolution maps of each specific area that I hunt.

Hi resolution. It is one of the main reasons I pick a phone with more storage.

I know my area. Not roaming around. So high resolution.

If small area do the high. If larger area which would require many maps - do the smaller res

Then when season is over and you’re back home - delete the offline maps you saved to free up space on your phone

Last year I did the medium resolution(10 miles wide) because I didn't have much phone space. The medium was more than adequate and I used them again this year even though I have a new phone.

High res for sure. Delete your old maps/maps in places your aren’t going to be. I don’t need my east coast whitetail maps when I’m hunting elk in the Rockies.

Ive got a standard Iphone 14 and have well over 20 downloaded in High. I don't keep a lot of other stuff on the phone, but it let me so I guess I had room.

I find medium to be sufficient.

I like the high res. Makes me feel more confident when I'm on the ground, but I'm sure you could get by with medium.

Medium is sufficent for me as well. However, I'm very familiar with the area I'm hunting.

I do a combo of different resolutions. One low res of the entire area, but they focus in on my Plan A's, B's, etc. with the high res. At the end of the day, I get as many within the unit as I can. I also will delete offline maps from previous years so i don't run into memory space issues.

I have changed my mind since my earlier post on map resolution. The medium resolution was not good enough this year. In our search for CO elk we ended up in many new spots and many that were lower elevation than usual. Much of which was oak brush. Much of which was impenetrable. We were using onx imagery to find veins through the oak brush where it wasn't as thick and pick routes from opening to opening. When zoomed in tight my medium resolution images were too blurry to pick routes. My buddy had downloaded the highest resolution and his were crystal clear even when zoomed in real tight. The difference in image quality was significant. Next season I will download highest quality too.

Oak brush sucks. Makes me feel better to get that off my chest.

Yes, high resolution makes a big difference for in the field navigation through thick areas. I used high res maps this summer for bear hunting in a new area. The detail that is only visible with high res allowed me to find the best routes while cutting across scree fields and avoiding thick areas choked with devils club or avalanche debris.

On one spot and stalk of a particular bear I just followed the elevation line where I had seen the bear from across a bowl. This led to going through all kinds of nasty brush. It was slow going, loud, and unsuccessful. On the way back I used onX to look for another way and the route I saw because I had enough satalite detail ended up being a heavily used bear trail that saved a lot of time and gave useful information. The animals know the easy ways through the woods and mountains that conserve their energy!

Yeah I had a similar experience. We were going to give up on our A choice and try out option B but the medium res maps weren't good enough. Luckily needed to run around the mountain and go through town so I had a little time to download new ones.

Always use high resolution. The couple extra minutes to save the maps is worth it. I may do a large low resolution box, just so I have something if I go exploring/driving somewhere, but anything I plan to use to put boots on the ground is high.
