OnX app. What am I missing?

I really like OnX, but I have hell marking waypoints when I"m in the field. It drops them in the middle of the screen and not necessarily where I'm standing and dragging them to where I'm standing seems to be pretty marginally accurate...haven't figured that one out yet.

On the app in the bottom right corner of map tool is a button called “mark my location”.

Ah! I see it, I just saw add waypoint and was trying to use that. Of course it helps that I have my cheaters on now, and I didn't in the field...

Thanks!

Download maps on WiFi
Adding a Waypoint places it at the crosshairs position.
“Mark my position” does just that, your position.
Start onx after you put the phone in airplane mode, this prevents the app from trying to connect to intermittent service.
Androids/onx have a memory issue and hundreds of waypoints/tracks will lock up the device on startup as it tries to load that data; iPhones don’t have that problem.
Multiple maps aren’t an issue on iPhone; I currently have 72, five mile maps loaded.
The latest update “allegedly” eliminates the need to turn layers on, just have them loaded into the states layers area.

My last phone upgrade was chosen with OnX use as a primary factor. On Andriod, the OnX app will only store the offline maps using onboard phone memory. It will not use the memory card storage. I called them about this a couple of years ago and OnX explained they are working on having the app do this but to date, I can't see where that change has been implemented. Buy an Android phone with as much onboard memory as you can afford. Saves some of the pains from the Android side.

I have had numerous times where I downloaded a map with all desired layers on only to have it not provide most of the information once I’m in the field using it. I’ll have to delete some old ones and see if it works better. This is on an iPhone 8+

I am a new user as well. When I downloaded the high res 5 mile square of the area I want, I cannot zoom in far enough to see the detail i need. Any thoughts or input on that, or is that what we have to live with? If so, I won't be re-newing next year. I need the detail I can get with some of the other free apps. I do need to play with it more though.

Like another user said the imagery in the offline version isn't the same as online, this is due to the agreement or licensing they have with google (the provider of the online imagery). The last time I contacted OnX about this I was told they are still working to fix that issue, but was also told that for now the medium resolution offline box would provide the same quality as the high quality resolution box. So if you are saving down maps I would always use the medium quality box to save time.

Long story short... they are working on it, but for now the offline imagery is what it is. Although feel free to contact them directly to see if they can help you out or provide more current information, they always have responded quickly when I've reached out.

I had no issues last year, when I first got the ap. This year I had problems with OnX both on and offline. I contacted customer service and they confirmed there had been a glitch and I would need to erase and reload my offline maps. I also did some research online and you must have the latest iPhone update for the ap to work correctly, as well. Once the iPhone update was done and the new maps uploaded, there were no more issues.

When using the OnX app can you down load the whole state at once?

No, you can only download small sections at a time. This year they at least updated it so you can queue up a bunch of sections and it will download all of them...HUGE improvement! Previously you had to download one section, wait for it to complete, then select the next one, lather, rinse, repeat for many hours!

They need a feature where you can, on your PC, dictate what you want downloaded to your phone. Draw complex boundaries, select specific hunting units, states, counties, etc. You make the selections on the PC, and then login on your phone, get a prompt asking if you'd like to download what was selected on the PC, and them blam it DL's all of it.

Be sure that BEFORE you download your offgrid map that you turn on all the layers you want to have access to within the offgrid map.

I like that idea. Post it up on their forum or, send it in to them via e-mail. They may not have considered this yet.

I've seen dozens of threads like this one all over the internet.. I too have had my battles with the app. When I hit an elk last year, its accuracy was garbage on marking waypoints. It even showed that I was in a totally different unit at times, all in airplane mode with a clear sky over me.. Since then, I have expressed my concerns with the developers and got the same canned response that they give everyone to give them a call and they could sort it out. Since then, I have taken my business to Gaia and haven't looked back.

It seems odd to me with all of the pre season prep we do, range, gear, scouting. That you would not check the app, maps etc. before starting your hunt.

It’s easy to turn your phone on airplane mode and turn off WiFi to see how it functions before heading into the field.

It’s amazing how spoiled we are with our phones/electronics. What if it was not on-x that failed you but instead you dropped your phone in the toilet.

Not sure we can all be mad at the app supplier whoever it is when the vast majority of the issues are user error. It’s not perfect but I will take it over my Garmin Oregon and chip all day long.

Lots in this thread. Interesting to learn that medium and high-res are the same quality. Wasting time and space downloading the 5 mile blocks.

I'm on a Note 9 now and had no problems with offline including airplane on and off when a signal was available. I had sporadic issues last year on an iPhone 6. I expect it's more updates to the app than ios vs android.

I was highly disappointed to learn I couldn't save maps to the microsd card. OnX has to fix that. OnX and Spotify are my biggest space hogs and besides the camera and neither allow external storage.

OnX tells you some layers aren't viewable offline because of rights restrictions. I had a national forest map layer and think that was one of them.

Navigation to a waypoint with onX leaves something to be desired as well. The cone jumps around quite a bit. I'd prefer a compass to pop up and just have an azimuth. I do carry a compass as backup but the app could include it along with an azimuth to the waypoint.
