"Only accurate rifles are interesting" - AR15 Edition

I'm doing research on an AR15 purchase and am looking for some recommendations. I want an AR15 that is guaranteed (or at least expected) to be a 1moa or better rifle. I'd prefer to get a factory rifle, but may consider customs.

What AR15s are legit sub moa rifles?

I have had 2 different Wilson match barrels from JSE Surplus, they were both boring-ly accurate with bullets from 40 to 77 grains, either hand loads or factory. I don't think there was anything my last one would shoot over 1 MOA...

You can have compass lake or white oak or Craddock build you a precision gasser, but that might not be what your purpose needs

I have a Faxon .223 pencil barrel on my lightweight AR, and it's impressed me with how well it shoots. 10 shot groups hover right around an inch at 100 yards, and it might do better if the gun weighed more and had a better trigger on it.

Rock river arms, some of their models are. I've got the Advanced Tactical Hunter ( think they're on V2 now). They've got a 3/4 moa guarantee. Both of mine will do it if I do my part.

I second build your own if you're up for it. Or get a complete lower and build off of that. It's fun and you get to mix-and-match components. Here are some MOA'ish groups from my setup with an 18" White Oak Armament MK1.9 barrel (1.9 pound 3-gun thin barrel):

If you have basic mechanical skills it’s very easy to assemble your own and 99.99% not run into any issues if you use quality parts. You can do it with $200 worth of tools assuming you don’t already own any of the necessary tools. A decent torque wrench is the most expensive part.

You mean companies that make ok quality factory rifles with cult like followings? Yes, lots.

Chances are if you buy a rifle with a good quality SPR barrel in the $1000-$1500 price range from a company that you’re not just paying for Gucci paint jobs and gay engravings, you’re going to get a good quality rifle.

Or just buy a good upper and a lower and slide the two takedown pins that you take down the clean the rifle every time anyway, find good uppers easier, and save a few bucks for the excise tax since you’re not buy a complete rifle.

The AR is the tikka of ARs. It’s a sound design and as long as you have a decent free-floated barrel and good trigger you’re there.

BCM is the Tikka of ARs. Mass produced, barrels better than they should be, inexpensive but used by professionals. It's reasonable to expect them to hold (a real) just over a minute.

The cottage brands mentioned here are capable of reliably churning out sub-minute (real) "SPRs" or ARs designed to shoot 77gn rounds at distance.

FWIW, I've owned a lot and pared down to 2 lowers.

1) a Pic lower from PSA for running JAKL, BRN-180, and the like with folding stocks for the truck
2) an Aero M4e1 lower for running all of my traditional direct impingement uppers (BCM, White Oak, stuff I build, etc). I chose the Aero because it's forged not billet (better upper compatibility), and it has a tensioning screw that takes care of the tolerance gap between uppers and lowers which are not matched. If you're getting a matched receiver set, the ICON are a tremendous value.

I’d be careful, building an AR is a slippery slope…….you’ll build that first one, then another one. You’ll tell yourself that you just need an upper…..

The nice thing about building is that when it turns out to not be sub MOA, instead of saying "This $1500 rifle is trash I guess I need a $2000 rifle," you say "This $200 barrel is trash I need a $300 barrel"

Ive had several cheap 5.56 platforms, and all shot 1/2 to 3/4 MOA.....I don't think you need to seek out a guarantee
