One Rifle to do it all Or a rifle for each occasion?

Being a rifle loony, I like to have a rifle for different occasions.

Creates overlap, but I really don't care.

I have 2 primary big game rifles.

760 gamemaster in 30-06 (Gun I use 99% of the time)
Browning A-bolt II 300 WSM (My western gun)

Honestly, if I put a CDS scope on my 30-06 I would likely never use my 300 WSM.

I'd say both! A nice beater rifle in caliber that can do most is very nice to have around. It's also nice to have guns that fits nicely into more specific situations. Nothing says freedom like a safe full of beautiful rifles/guns...

I have two main Big Game Rifles. 300WM and 7mm-08. "Big" and "Small". I have lots of other rifles that I enjoy using, 25-06, 45/70, .243, etc.... But if I had to choose two, it would be Big and Small

I started with the 06 my father gave me. I changed to a 7RM. I think I saw in a magazine where they said "shoot what you can shoot well". Another said the smallest you should use for elk was an 06 but a 338 was preferable.

I even went through a phase of loading differant bullets for differant uses. Since in the old days, there were days that I saw twice as many deer or more for every elk I found. I shortly got that out of my system and selected a bullet that performed well in everything I might encounter and upgraded my scope and rifle for weight, balance and overall appearance so it preased my eye. I have spares but I hunt with just one. The one I can consistantly shoot well.

ive only got one now. Its a bergara 308. I would love to have something in 280 ai but everytime I think about it i go back to the why question. My shots are 300 and in, so why do I need something bigger. I will prob go on a cow moose hunt in the next year or two but thats about it so I will prob just limit the range and use it.
with that said, I would love to upgrade my 308 to, but my bergara shoots lights out and 99 percent of my hunting is deer at 50 yds.
I so want another rifle, but why.

Was raised with a 1 gun philosophy and then times changed, easier to get guns, etc.

Put me down for 1 heavier, 1 medium, 1 light.

I rarely hunt game larger than hogs & deer so my go to is my suppressed .223 with 75gr pills.
It's so sweet shooting, I've had 7 year olds 100% comfortable shooting it.
It's cheap and efficient to reload letting me shoot 100s of rounds a year, I'm very confident with it under 250yds.

When I go chase larger game, my old man has a sweet Tikka .308 that I borrow.

308 forever but last 3 years been using an 06 more on and off.
now going to load the 8mm/338 Mauser and use it next fall for no good reason.

I only have a 30-06 which is fine for most things but I wish i had something lighter as well for newer shooters. I've had young nieces and nephews put off by the recoil.

Reduced loads come in handy for the kids. I use blue dot loads not much louder than a 22 mag and zero kick.

Hey there! What bullets do you shoot out of the faster twist barrels? Does an 8 twist still shoot the lighter 130s ok? Or only heavier bullets? I’m going to be rebarreling my current tikka 270 shortly so I can have it threaded for a suppressor and trying to decide on twist rate. Likely going with a 21 or 22” barrel. Any insight on why you like or dislike a certain twist?

I’ve used 130’s -165’s
8 twist shoots some 130’s just fine. It exacerbates and exaggerates any concentricity issues the lighter bullet has. Also, most loads hit the pressure wall quicker with 8 twist then with 9 twist.

I’d recommend a 9 twist and 22-24” length

I agree w the .22 and probably everyone should own a 223/556. Can't get my head around the 243 as a heavy gun. Let's make it something that can throw a 180 or 200 gr bullet and I'm there.

Sure.

I'm a .223/77gr TMK believer though, so only need the .243/95gr TMK for additional range and states that don't allow hunting with a .223.

Im building a 7 PRC that will be my go to gun for everything. Ill keep my 7 Rem Mag as a back up.

I'll make it light enough to take in the sheep mountains (sub 7.5lbs) and it has enough power for elk and moose.

I should’ve quit when I discovered what the .270 Win is capable of. I told myself I was going to have just one rifle and now I’m down to 4 .270’s, 2 30/06’s, 6 6.5 CM’s, 3 7x57’s, 1 6.5x55, 2 9.3x62’s, 2 30/30’s and a 375 Ruger.
Believe it or not, I’ve made great strides toward my one gun goal.

I change out rifles for hunts more than I change my underwear…I usually change my underwear….variety is great, but when I get serious, the 30-06 usually comes out. Boring for sure, but in a good way.
