Greetings,

I'm prepping for some high alpine hunts next year in western Washington. I am of the buy once cry once mindset and would like to get a pack for multi-day back country hunts. The kicker is, I'm 5'8" 215lb and built like a dumptruck. Who has experience with pack for wide builds like myself and would packs should I be looking at, if price was not a factor.

I do believe that question ask been dabbled on before. Try the search function with your choice of a key word.

As for recommendations, albeit I've got a few inches on you, my Inital ascent has a decent amount of room for adjustment in the shoulders and waist with a different belt size. ^what he said above, also include barneys packs/frame into that mix

I have Bozeman made mystery ranch, kifaru and stone glacier as well as dana designs and alaska range external frames.

I have found the adjustability of the stone glaicer to put it in the lead for me. I'm built similarly and as wide as my shoulders are many packs pinch my neck muscles on one side. The stone glaicer is able to "splay" the attachment to offset this and it can be adjusted in seconds vs the agony with the kifaru and the only way (which works for me) to do this with the MR is to set the yoke at a slight angle.

Kifaru is heavier built than the stone, but the stone more purposeful. I don’t need 5k lb tape webbing to hold on my water bottle.

Stone glaicer customer service is what kifaru should be using as a how to. Call both outfits and you'll understand. Kifaru makes a great product and I have several of their packs and frames and such, but I don't see myself buying another after my customer service experiences.

I'd start out with a few phone calls. Each person will have diff body types (as you mentioned). I've tried them all (SG, Exo, Kifaru, IA and AKEK) and kept the Kifaru Ark frame as it carries the weight and spreads the load across my hips/back/shoulders very well. All companies I have spoken to on the phone or via email were more than willing to answer questions and provide advice/feedback. Take a few mins and call them.....this should help guide you in your decision. Best of luck!

The AKEK packs now have a larger and better designed hipbelt and of course the shoulder width is adjustable. You can do the free trial and if it doesn't fit just send it back. Watch the short video below if you have never seen the AKEK packs before:

Kifaru fits me the best and is built for a lifetime of use. Kifaru customer service isn’t near what it was…. but the gear itself could outlive the buyer. Stone Glacier would be my choice if this Kifaru stuff I own ever wears out.
