Planning a trip to hunt second week of November and looking for some general information on public land in Oklahoma. I figure that time frame there will be quite a bit of pressure but that's expected. I hunt low deer densities where I live so I mainly just want to see deer. Pretty much just going to make this trip a meat hunt and have fun to break up my hunting season. If you could just share some general information and experiences about hunting Oklahoma public land that would be great or if you could pm me and help me with some more specific questions I have that would be fantastic.

That’s bow season, pressure will be lower than you think. Can easily find a place all to yourself. What part of the state are you looking at?

Probably stick to the eastern half of the state but I never set anything in stone on a trip. For now the Southeast portion has my attention just because I really enjoy hunting terrains and topo features. I like the looks of the brushy ridges but I really don't know what it takes to hold deer in an area in Oklahoma. What features concentrate deer and what not.

Find creek bottoms, isolated water holes, areas of timber with some crop fields nearby….pretty much the same as anywhere else.

Where do you normally hunt?

Coal country of Southeast Kentucky. Mostly hunt Daniel Boone National Forest or a lot of the coal company land that's recently been turned in to public access.

Make sure and use something like OnX or other mapping service, lots of land in SE OK is not fenced in but it is private property. Helps to know where you are if you are hunting.

I'm going to assume you have looked at this. Oklahoma Wildlife Department has good info on their site

I would recommend the Atoka areas but it is known for multiple Sasquatch sightings. Ponotoc County is just north of Atoka which is prime Big Foot country.

Yes I have read every word on the Oklahoma website. One of the best informational state wildlife pages I have ever looked at. I have a first cousin that is a hardcore sasquatcher so I am well versed on that aspect lol.

So I am way more interested in the meat aspect of the hunt rather than horns. I am taking my recurve so I am out to have fun and shoot arrows. Does the southest portion of the state being more hilly and mountainous hold a good amount of deer as compared to the lower ag areas do?

SE Oklahoma is a good choice. Lots of public lands that way and good access to it. You might also check out some of the areas in North Central OK as well. Getting closer to Kansas has more agriculture and bigger deer in general. There are several different areas that are public as well as OLAP access in that area. Bow season between our black powder and rifle is a prime time to be out in the woods. I recommend a light weight tree stand or saddle set up for mobility and you will need to be up in a tree generally speaking.

Probably planning to be out there for 7-10 days so I am sure we will hit a ton of diff public areas. I have alot of diff spots marked on ONX but unless you have ever spent time in the area it's hard to say what will or will not hold deer from a map. So I am wondering what cover, terrain, and food types hold deer during the time frame I'll be there.

The acorn crop will be key. If the acorns are scarce then the deer will be spread out more. If you find a good source of those you will be in good shape for a doe harvest. Look for those areas close to the thick cover they will use for bedding.

Yeah it's gonna be hard to have it figured it out 100% ahead of time. There may be fields that were planted the year before that aren't this year and vice versa. When I am hunting public, I look for diversity. The SE part of the state is really the only part I haven't hunted but I would imagine it will work there as well.

I'm NE OK, hit me up if you have any questions. I also tend to take time off that time of year and camp out on public in the truck. I saddle and still hunt. Still hunting may work well that time of year to cover ground/scout sign/hunt .

put in for the controlled hunts run thru the state. There are some good deer hunts available and it’s very cheap for a resident to put in for. I drew 2 deer hunts and and an elk hunt in 4 years of applying.

I didn’t end up hunting but I did swing through Oklahoma on my way back from South Dakota and scouted for two days. Out of everything we looked at I didn’t care much for the type terrain or woods that we seen. We drove a road through a certain WMA one evening and seen 46 deer in 2 miles. The deer numbers in there were incredible. Very low hunting pressure right there as well. Oklahoma would be worth a try just pick out several areas and cover ground. PM me for a little more detail.
