For an off he shelf, mass produced rifle is Remington still a good choice, or should someone go for Winchester, Tikka, Savage etc. or something maybe a bit "higher end? General hunting, deer, and elk. Not asking about caliber, just the rifle in general.

I would skip Remington until they are back as an established operation again. Companies going bankrupt tend to put out a wider range of quality for the last few years to the end. Warranty work is another concern that I would have.

The other three you mention are good bets as is Weatherby, Mauser (M18), Sauer (100), and Ruger Hawkeye or American.

Man I love my remingtons and would go that route once they are back up and operational. As he mentioned, warranty support would be my biggest concern. Tikka/sako are amazing rifles and I dont think tikka can be beat at the price point. Weatherby is also making some good stuff now. I just love how smooth the tikka action is. Ill also add that the Thompson center venture is an amazing value rifle under $500. Much much nicer than a savage axis or Ruger American in my opinion. See if you can find a gunshop that'll let you handle as many as possible and look up reviews for the ones you like online. Out of all the hunting rifles I have (and I have a lot), my TC venture shoots the tightest groups and that includes a custom tikka carbon fiber rifle. Its also a bit heavier than most of my rifles so I do take that in to account.

I do regret not buying one of Ruger's M77 rifles back in the day, I think I would have chosen their version of the "Mountain Rifle" in .30-06 or .270.

Remington is the only one I want. I’ve had great luck with everyone I’ve ever owned. Over the last few years, I’ve been on a Remington Model Seven kick. Fantastic little rifles.

I want one of those hs models so bad. I just bought a 700 mountain ss and that thing is gorgeous. I really want a model 7 in .308 next for the Adirondacks and let my youngest son use since they are so small.

I bought my daughter a Ruger American in 6mm creedmoor a while back and just took it out shooting this weekend. After 5-6 rounds I had it dialed in where I wanted it and tried 4 different ammo types. Every one of them was under an inch and the best of them was with Hornady Match ammo that went something like .70. For a really cheap gun I am super impressed. A buddy also just bought an American in 308 and I am excited to see how that thing shoots.
I love my Tikkas, I think its a hell of a bang for your buck. My 300 WM shoots really well.
Someone mentioned the Remington model 7 in 308, thats one of the guns I regret selling the most. It was a sweet little rifle. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Christensen and Bergara are worth a look. I believe both are pretty much a 700 action. Also, even though its already been said, can’t go wrong with a Tikka

Rifle Biased,
I'm impressed with the quality of the Winchester Featherweight purchased as a gift for my grandson in 2020. I paid a discount price from the box store that was discontinuing the model from there line up. Built in Portugal by FN, with quality fit and finish that surprised me. I like walnut stocks and this one has a pretty decent piece of walnut. Chambered in .308 Win the rifle is not picky with different loads and even bullet weights. Take a good look at the Maple/Stainless configuration, as it is a real stunner. They call it the rifleman's rifle for a reason. Good luck with what ever choice you make.

I have 4 700's, all of them are shooters.
I also have a .375 Ruger Alaskan, no complaints with it either.
Also a Marlin 25MN, 22 mag. Tack driver.

I've been impressed by the accuracy of both the Savage axis and the ruger american. For low end rifles, they flat out shoot. Sub 1" groups are the norm for many of them. Usually in the $400 range or less. Of the two I'd give the ruger the nod just slightly. Neither one is pretty, but you can find nicer stocks for both.

Hit the easy button. Tikka T3x Stainless and SWFA SS 3-9x42 with Sportsmatch rings. Then buy (or reload) as much ammo as you can and SHOOT.
