How much % of your body weight is your pack? This is where being small is a big disadvantage and the reason I am going to become a oz counter..

Thanks,
Boswell

not really a "perfect" way to calculate load abilities and quite often the "smaller" guy can carry a larger % of his or her body weight - everyone is different - you say that you are at a disadvantage due to your size ? start working out your lower body for "power" (squats, lunges and so on) and watch "your" %'s skyrocket - also, don't discount stamina as an important part of the overall equation, some have a natural affinity for stamina that others work their asses off for - all of my younger and early middle age years I was a weightlifter and everyone always made comments about my carrying and "packing" abilities but in truth I had a very difficult time keeping up with the "athletes" I hunted with You have more packing ability than you give yourself credit for I suspect .... ounces are important to all of us, just like MILES are

Going in, anywhere from 30-35%. I'm only 5'6" 145, and I can hike steady all day with that weight (40-50). Like was said above, the ideal ratio will vary based on individual fitness, distance, and terrain.

I'm always impressed by how much weight people who live in the Andes can pack. They're small in stature, but those shorter legs must have an incredible mechanical advantage over my 5-11 frame with proportionately longer legs. We're all kinda stuck with the bodies we have, but I've always wondered what the optimum combination would be.

Of course, they've been doing it all their lives, which gets to the MILES above, but the physics of it ultimately comes into play at some point (so I've heard).
