Odd Request - ISO

This is probably and odd request but I'm trying to think outside the box. This year I'm planning my first OTC archery elk hunt in units 82, 86, and 861. I'll be traveling up on the 29th of August and heading back on September 12th.

My wife has some thyroid health issues which create some hurdles that I have to plan accordingly for, one of which is extreme anxiety in some cases. She is very worried about this trip due to it being so out of the norm from what I've done in the past and me going solo. I've tried to do this trip the last few years with different people but it has fallen through each year due to those people flaking out so I'm going solo this year.

Just curious if there might be others on here planning on hunting this same general area during this time that would possibly want to exchange contact info and be open to assisting one another if either got in a bind. Not talking about hunting or camping together but just someone that would be somewhat close if either needed something. I will have a Inreach Mini and am looking into possibly renting a sat phone.

Right now my loose plan is to truck camp but have the ability to bivy out if it makes sense.

Hi,

I assume you are talking about Colorado? I can't help you as I'm hunting a different state but it sounds like a good plan. Having the Inreach is a great part of your plan. I carry one as well. I truck camp till I find good elk or Elk sign then I sometimes bivy in as you would say to allow me to hunt later and get up later. You probably already have one but it's good to also have a hand held GPS and compass for back up. I wouldn't think a sat phone would be necessary too with having the Inreach. It should be a great escape for you and good luck on your hunt and with finding a partner.

The problem with the mini is that you have to initiate the text and they can only reply. I send the "last" text in the conversation so they can respond to it when they need to. I am not very far away which helps. I skype in when I can. If I were in your shoes, I would try to rent a sat phone, as there isn't a substitute for a voice. Either that or hunt close to cell range.

I don't have the inreach Mini. I have the regular inreach. It's not that big and the battery last a long time. It does take a long while to charge but at the same time discharges very slowly too. I leave mine turned off most of the time to conserve power but if you leave it on you can be tracked but like I say it also burns battery life faster. You can text anytime but it cost extra. I have a few text messages that are pre typed and you can send them as much as you want at no extra charge. I let my wife know "I'm OK" twice a day with the pre typed messages. Of course if you have a true emergency you just move the safety and hit one button and help is on the way!

I am curious though about what would happen if you come upon someone injured and use your own inreach to initiate Emergency help? Just wondering if there would be any cost or negative repercussions?
