my boots are Schnee Beartooths. i need to condition them before my December hunt.

my brother just used the Kenetrek stuff (on his Kenetrek boots) and offered me his leftovers. i was just running to a local store for a new tub of Obenauf LP paste. i use it for my workboots (Danner).

both boot are goretex waterproof. i assume the conditioner makes the leather water repellent? the K-brand does say WATERPROOF on the tub.

whats' the lowdown?

I use the kenetrek paste on my kenetreks. It keeps the leather from drying out and gives an additional bit of waterproofing to the seams and joints.

Schnees (Curt himself) recommended the nikwax paste in the white tub for my Beartooth Mids. Reason being he said they are vegetable tanned and the nikwax holds better. If they were oil tanned like their pack boots he said absolutely something like their waterproofer, MT pitch blend etc. can’t say for sure how yours were tanned but I can say mt pitch blend didn’t last long on my previous Beartooth sand the nikwax has done well over the past two years. Before that I was convinced the nikwax paste wax was junk because it didn’t last. Well it was the wrong application by me not the product.

I use both products you mentioned, I keep the Obenauf stuff for my all leather boots (I think it fits the intended use for woodland firefighters better) and use the Kenetrek stuff for my boots with a liner (Gore-Tex/windtex). I believe both are made with the same beeswax base, it’s just the choice of additives that are different. They both apply the same, damn near smell the same but I feel like the kenetrek stuff has to be just a smidge warmer. When my Obenauf tub runs out I’ll probably just run the kenetrek stuff for simplicity. They seem really similar to begin with.

Kenetrek talks about a concern of failure where the rubber sole is glued to the leather, that is why they recommend their paste. I don't know what is in Obenauf's, so I only use it on leather where that isn't a concern (gloves, stitched boots).
RMMV

I prefer the Obenauf one because it seems to last longer and keep the boots in overall better condition. That being said I did use the Kennetrek wax on my knew mountain extremes because that's what they recommend. Just doesn't seem to be as waterproof or durable. From what I've read online you can use the Obenauf paste it's the oil that they don't recommend.
