Not so duty AR cans?

I’ve been looking at cans for an 11.5” carbine-length gas gun. There are Avogadro’s number of AR cans on the market and there is a ton of innovation going on at the moment. The Duty Can thread was helpful, but I don’t really need or want a 12-16 oz duty can that will handle 60 rounds at cyclic. I don’t have super high expectations on sound suppression given that port pop is pretty unavoidable. I would like to keep the weight down without going ultra lite and minimize gas blow back as much as possible. What would y’all recommend?

Here’s what I’m working with. I have an 11.5” Criterion Core barrel, with an H3 buffer and a Geissle braided super 42 spring. The gun currently has a fixed gas block, but I have a Superlative Arms adjustable gas block that I can swap over if needed.

Thanks in advance.

I just got an Ab A-10 out of jail for my AR. Not super light but its full auto rated, and for the price, cant be beat. I did go with the 7.62 because its going on a 300blk sbr at some point.

AB does make great cans. I have a Raptor 8-stack. The A-10 5.56 is my default plan, especially given the cost. Wondering if it’s worth it to consider any of the newer low-back pressure cans. Many of them are pretty pricey. Most are pretty heavy.

I bet a mole of AR cans is pretty gd heavy

I’m in a similar position as the OP. Has anyone compared the a-10 in 762 and 556 versions on a 11.5ish barrel? If so any preference/differences between the two?

I haven't used that one in particular, but I can tell you that .30cal cans on a 5.56 generally suck. If I could go back in time, I would buy a separate can dedicated for .224cal instead of falling for the .30cal general purpose meme.

Thanks, I would be leaving this can on the 11.5 so not looking for a do all. The price on the A10s are hard to beat and that’s what has me curious about them.

How do 30cal cans suck on 5.56mm AR’s?

For the reasons you are describing (port pop) it's fairly hard to go wrong. Also I would recommend you drop $19.99 on a YHM "suppressor" gas block. It's got a .062 port (from memory) and at least in my experience it's a good long term solution to set the gas without having to depend on an adjustable gas block. The restricted gas tubes also work well but they are 3x the price. I use both.

Some of the old school 30 cal cans had way lower back pressure than the old school 556 cans, to the point where I still run some on my ARs.

If you're wanting something a bit on the lighter side, a Helios TI from CGS might be something to consider.

Anyone have any news on when US will be releasing their .223 suppressor?

IIRC in one of the other threads US said they were working on their hunting and PRS cans first and wouldn’t likely get to the AR can until late 26. The US can looks pretty interesting based on what specs Form posted.

Heard nothing but good things about CGS cans, but that’s one of the most expensive 5.56 suppressors I’ve seen.

Anybody have experience with one of these?

The UM can seems like it would beat it for size, weight, and durability. Hard to say on suppression.

For what you're looking at, a lightweight, low pressure hybrid TI can like that would be the way to go. The Rhino S gets good reviews, as does the Exigent Vanish 556.

Ridgeback also makes a 6mm/5.56 can they call the Rhodie 6 and a shorter version called the Rhodie 6k. The current Rhodie is Inconel, but they are bringing out a Ti version in March or May and I'm probably going to pick one up.

Other good hybrid options would be the CAT Noah and Whitebread TI. I run the Noah Ti on my 13" 6mm and 12.5" 5.56mm , and like it a lot.

The Silencer Analytics videos are subjective in terms of sound, but he does use a rifle speed has block on a set rifle configuration to compare backpressure between cans in terms of what setting they need to be on to lock back. His comparisons are interesting to me at any rate and are what really put the Rhodie 6 and Tisha on my radar. This latest video is a comparison of his current favorite cans on 5.56 (out of like 200 cans he has) worth a look in my opinion.

Started watching this guy’s stuff a couple weeks ago. Would not recommend doing what he does unless you want to say “huh?” and “What?” a lot when you’re old, but it is a helpful comparison and I enjoy his videos.

Right now, I would say the Ridgeback Rhino and Rhodie and the AB A-10 5.56 seem to be good options for weight, suppression, and durability. The Unknown Suppressors can that @Formidilosus posted seems like it might beat these, but the release date is like the name of the company. Honestly at $450, I’m leaning towards the A-10, and I don’t feel like that would be a decision I would regret.

I’m hoping to get my carbon-locked Raptor 8-stack to come apart so I can test it on this 11.5” gas gun without the reflex. If the gun shoots decently, I intend to buy one of these 5.56 cans that will be dedicated to it. Also thinking the Raptor will go back to my 6.5 Tikka and, the new US 6mm reflex can may find its way onto my Tikka 223.
