Is anyone working up loads or complete that can share experience of using Nosler 28 with Berger 195 gr 7mm bullet?

I am bulging a new 7mm and trying to decide if keeping 7mm with Berger 195 gr or go to Nosler 28.

we'll have some info on the bullets soon as a few members are testing those. Keep an eye on this forum.

I'm going to be building either a 284 Jazz or 28 Nosler throated for 195's. Leaning towards the Jazz because of smaller COAL and the inherent accuracy of the Norma parent case,...

I have yet to make a decision, but will need to do so soon. I did a quick pro/con on the 28 Nosler, curious to see what others have.
Pro's of 28 Nosler

> flatter trajectory
> same .284 bullets with high BC

Con's

> Shorter barrel life -- really pushing a long bearing surface bullet really fast.
> will use more powder
> More recoil -- might want to think about a muzzle brake with this much recoil

Have seen speeds of 3100 fps posted with the 28 Nosler and 195 grain EOL. I am in the 2800 plus range in a 7mm rem mag. Not sure a guy needs the uber velocity with this bullet, but the 28 Nosler seems capable of delivering it.

Curious how these preform as well. I picked up a nosler patriot a few weeks ago and have been wanting to try the 168 and 180 gn bergers but these really have my interest peaked to try bergers agin. I love my Barnes in everything I've used them in. Curious about sensitivity to seating depth with these as well. The other bergers I tried where extremely finicky to seating depth. Part of the reason I quit using them.

If anyone has info on whether or not the chamber/throat needs to be worked for the 195 EOL in 28 Nosler (or 7rem mag for that matter) please share as well. I don't mind single feeding to get the OAL but am curious if a spec chamber will allow an optimum OAL with respect to seating depth and the amount of case space taken up by the bullet if it has to be seated deeply.

My buddy is debating a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in 28 Nosler. Would the Carbon barrel be burned out as fast? Really don't know much about the Carbon barrels, but seems like an intriguing combo. Any updates on the loads?

Also, is 28 Nosler recoil on par with 7mm Rem Mag or more like 7mm Ultra Mag?

n2horns,

When you say Nosler 28, I am assuming you are referring to the 7mm Accubond LR bullet? I just started out with a 26 (I haven't gone thru enough ammo to start reloading), but my pop is utilizing the aforementioned ABLR in the 7mm 150gr, IMR 4350, 63 grains, 3230 fps, 24" barrel, 1-9". I know this is somewhat of an apples to oranges, but if you have any questions i'm more than willing.

The carbon barrel might last longer. However, if long shot strings aren't in order, barrel life will likely be the same. The carbon they use supposedly conducts heat better than steel. On my CA, after a 10 shot string the steel liner is significantly warmer than the outer carbon. I'm not sure if that's because the carbon is a poor conductor, or a good one and it's cooling faster than the steel. So far I haven't had any POI shift on long shot strings though.

As far as heat goes, the barrels are going to last about the same. No 28 nosler barrel is going to like being shot 10 straight times, steel or carbon. Just an FYI the main carbon barrels on the market today are built totally different with different grades of carbon and different high temp resin.

I like carbon barrels because you can get a stiffer barrel with a little weight savings. Also remember carbon is stiffer than steel of the same weight, not of the same thickness. A Christensen arms barrel, which is the stiffest carbon barrel on the market, might be thick as a sendero taper but will be Just under a #5 taper in stiffness.

I'm talking about the 28 Nosler using the new Berger 195 grain .284 bullet to using the same bullet within the 7mm rem mag build. I opted a few nights ago to go with the rem mag build and ordered the reamer. I'm building on a 28 inch barrel. I should be at or near 2980 with the 195s. Will know more in about a month.

I was using the ABLR 168 grain 7mm .284 in my previous rifle with reloder 22. I was about 2860 with good groups on 26 inch barrel. I'll be using either Retumbo or H1000 with CCI BR2 primers in Nosler brass.

You should be getting closer with 3100 with a 28" pipe.

Have a LPR 28 Nosler, Razor Ti action, proof 26" barrel and slings 180 hybrids at 3119 validated with no pressure issues. Don't see the point of trying to push 195's at 3100 just for a little more down range energy. If you need to ethically kill beyond 1k, step up to a big 30 cal with 230's or wait for bergers new 245's
