Northern Idaho Mulies.

unfortunately the dates they have in unit 1 means pretty much any summer scouting goes out the window as for finding deer then hunting them. I feel like its a disadvantage in that country to the guy who's willing to scout a lot in the summer. You can locate bucks in the summer and effectively hunt them if it opened Oct 10 like a lot of other units. Most of all of that high country by the 3rd or 4th week is vacated by the bucks and they are moving down some to the does.
But it is nice to get out in the summer and see what caliber of bucks are in the area.

I've found increasing success in this area. Be willing to spend actual hunting time away from the visibility of road systems. Nearly any decent spot that can be glassed from a road in the entire panhandle has numerous hunters with big glass, and frequently thermals. As was mentioned, hunt as many days as possible, but be in prime areas as long as possible, which often means several hours of hiking in the dark both ways, and some wet overnight camps.

I’ve been thinking that North Idaho mulies trophy potential could be on the rise. Especially with our dwindling winters these bucks have tons of cover to go undetected their whole lives. Now if we could just get guys to stop shooting all the forky bucks it would be even better!!

In addition to our 4-legged predators, another issue affecting muleys' numbers is that hunters are killing muleys (bucks and does) when the season is only open for whitetails. I have seen many, many muleys confiscated at check stations and many more in the backs of trucks.

Hate to hear that

The hard part now is that since the wolf trapping seasons have been crippled there’s already a slight increase in wolves. So the progress made may not really be for long…
