Did you end up hunting whitetails in that area in 2024? I’m hoping to do a trip in the same area this fall and have started doing some research. Was looking at some semi-guided hunts in the Gillette, Sundance, Hulett area, Anyone know about these areas and the deer numbers?
Thanks for any info.
Sent you a PM sir.I have spent decades in the northern Black Hills (mostly on the SD side but also in WY). The lion in my prof pic was actually quite close to Sundance. White tail deer numbers have been great in my experience in the areas around in sundance/hulett in the hills but aren't quite as big (has to do with the quality of food the mothers have available while they were in the womb). If that's okay with you I'm not sure a guide is necessary if you hunt the national forest. IMO, the prairie numbers fluctuate more so with winters and disease, but produce larger deer. It is mostly all private land outside of the national forest which is where a guide, or even just paying a trespass fee would come in handy. IMO the white tail numbers are fine recently and I personally wouldn't recommend you wait, as I think they are pretty good and just as likely to get worse as they are to get better (many of these areas WY actually wants to decrease whitetail numbers). Fun area to hunt, high success rate, decent trophy potential, and not too difficult or expensive.
