You must apply every year or you lose your points. If you have 1 point currently you must apply in 2025 or you lose the point. You wouldnt be able to bank a second point in 2025 without applying to hunt as well

You don’t have to apply for tag every year.
If you fail to apply consecutive years you lose your points. So you have to apply at least every other year.

Instead of looking at all the big giant scary numbers why don’t you look at individual licenses. Are you concerned about all the deer or just a mule deer? Would you be interested to know how many of those tags are for bull elk or are you going to cry about every elk tag sold? Before you bitch, you need to break down the details.

How many nonresident deer and elk tags do they allow in your home state?

If you fail to apply for two consecutive years you lose your points. So you have to apply at least every other year.

This is not true. MT FWP has updated and reworded this concept to make it more clear - it is found HERE.

"Any accumulated preference points are lost if the applicant does not apply for a nonresident combination license in consecutive years, or if you are successful at obtaining a combination license.."

Yeah I lost 2 points being unaware of the rule change. I was just humming along banking points..was going to apply for point number 3 and lo and behold…I had zero. Never spent much time on the MT FWP site because my attention was focused on whatever state I was going to hunt that year

I took out the two in my post.
But you do not have to apply every year for a tag.
e.g. You can buy a point in ‘25 then in ‘26 you have to apply for a tag. If you fail to apply in ‘26 you’ll lose your point
My brother bought a point in’23 & ‘24 got a point at app, drew a tag
My hunting associate bought a point in ‘23 and didn’t apply in’24, he lost his point.
