after reading a bunch about ditching the softshell, I think I'm ready to give it a try. I'm not a huge fan of camo, and I believe non camo backpacking clothing can be as good or better than camo. I'm looking for a hard shell to wear under my puffy and base layers etc. quiet, brown green colors, tough, breathable, economical, (construction worker with two kids). and obviously waterproof. this will be for a Sept early rifle bill elk tag in nevada, at approx 10000 feet. that time of year thunderstorms seem to come in every evening.. any suggestions.. marmot precip, or helium? Patagonia torrenshell, Northgate resolve? what have you guys used and think

Outdoor Research Foray I found an olive jacket on sale for $50

(I wear my hardshell over my puffy and base layers)

For a 20 yard Texas whitetail archery shot? Probably

For rifle hunting? No

I bow and rifle hunt elk in Wyoming so nothing is noisier than the wind.

yea. but it seems like some especially backpacking shells are extremely noisy. I'll know once the ups guy drops out off.

Check out camofire.com

Their selection rotates but I scored a normally $700 Sitka Stormfront in solids for around $250 on there, still not cheap but an amazing jacket.

Massdrop always has lots of shells for cheap in the Ultralight category.

I have the OR helium pants and they are a bit noisy but not too bad and I don't wear them when its calm and I have to be sneaky.
