No luck in Utah

No luck this year on north slope. It was bizarre. There was boatloads of sign everywhere in the now dead timber (beetle kill) at 10,500 feet but nothing would come into our calls. Tried watching the meadows and even the alpine openings above. Only saw cows. Things sure have changed from the 2000’s when our group was running 60% kill ratio. Last five years we have really just run a piss poor kill ratio. Almost embarrassing numbers from a decade ago. About ready to go try Colorado again. Not sure what’s wrong.

A buddy's seeing wolf sign in SW Colorado, but we're letting the ballot box replace the recommendations of wildlife biologists since merging wildlife with parks.

Maybe it’s the cow herd reduction, or more hunters educating the bulls in archery, or hotter weather, or Artemis is just unhappy with us mortals.

It was 60 degrees and sunny the first five days. Lots of horse trailers at the trailhead too.

It’s getting to be that whitetail hunting is more enjoyable. Big deer camp with friends, dutch oven cooking a roast, warm wall tent, good wine, lots of animals to see. Less work for more benefits.

I need to up my hunting game apparently, i dont know where everyone finds time to make good food like roasts during hunting season. I need a camp cook is what i need. Its oatmeal for breakfast, meal bars for lunch, and this year i was spoiled in a truck camper and elk burgers for dinner after dark... usually its just mountain houses.

Off topic but worth a mention.

Dutch oven cooking is easy.

Get some good logs rolling around lunch time to create coals.

Put it in by 3pm with plenty of liquid and it will be ready by 7pm. I usually amp up the fire after I get back to camp and drink a beer or two while it gets the final char.

Pork butt has so much fat that it’s super easy to cook.

Roast Recipe:
Coarse chopped onion in pot

Put pork roast in fat side up

Add potatoes or carrots (optional)

Green onions

Add 1/2 cup olive oil

1/3 cup apple cider vinegar

Squeeze 1 lemon in

Add 1/3 cup honey

Add bottle of cheap white wine.

Spices are pepper, salt, garlic powder, oregano.

Herbs are 6 sprigs of rosemary and 6 sprigs of thyme.

They are not easy in the Uintas. Very hard in fact. I've heard harder than they used to be decades ago even though number are higher.
