Started this thread a while ago. Found out I hit the lotto and drew 16A. Leave next Friday and hunt through the close of 1st season. Hopefully the temps drop by then.

Thank you. Hoping 16A proves to be as great as it's supposed to be with the big bulls.

Thanks. I hope the weather cools off a bit soon down there and the rain has been enough for decent antler growth.

My wife has the first muzzy hunt also and it’s probably the hunt I’ve been most looking forward to year.

I hope it’s a great hunt and I’m optimistic it will be but every year is different and this year has been one that has been completely unpredictable in all aspects including elk hunting. I think the one thing we will have going for us is the new moon. Should be as dark as it can possibly be at night for the first few days of the hunt so hopefully they’ll be moving more in the mornings and evenings and not at night. Other than that I am predicting nothing. Bugling would be great but I’m not gonna hold my breath or count on anything, just gonna hunt hard and hope for a blessing from the good Lord and maybe a little luck.

Good luck to everyone!

I have seen some huge racks that came out of the 16s the last week of archery season. Some serious mass and not broken off which is surprising because It has been very hot and dry. Shorts and tee shirts mid morning. We didn't get much of a monsoon. One afternoon it rained hard and flooded my driveway but that was it. We had a cold front come through a few day ago which caused the bulls to get vocal in the morning and again in the afternoon but that only lasted a day. Today was back in the 80s and quiet. I did see some elk after sunrise this morning though.

Gila,
Did they ever go Into the full Rut?
Oh yes, the fullmoon seemed to get the cows going. They will git 'er done at night. Bulls are still looking for cows and fighting. I have not seen any herds with mature bulls yet but I am sure they exist. Yesterday I watched a 5 by move in on two cows after first light with no herd bull around. Next week will be a crazy time no doubt.

I had the 16E 2nd archery hunt. Killed my bull on day 2 doing spot and stalk. The rut action was obsolete. The elk were all in good shape though considering..

How’s the moisture/grass growth been this summer? Seems like every time I look at the forecast they have a good chance of rain.
