NM Proclamation up.

I know that NM is not too popular due to the quota draw, and how it is done, but if anyone is interested in putting in for tags the proclamation is available in PDF, and interestingly enough, you can start putting in for online OTC licenses and the draw....License year doesn't start until 1 April 2014.

Good luck! Part of the heartburn comes from the need to buy a license prior to entering the draw. If you are not drawn the fee is refunded to you, but the State keeps the cost of the General (basic) license. So the draw has an entrance fee.

Out of state applicant: General Hunting license-$65. Elk license-Antlerless $354, Bull $564 Quality Antlerless, bull, or either sex $789

All needs to be paid in advance before the draw, and even if you fail to draw you spend $65 to try.

Only 6% of the licenses are available to out of state DIY hunters, and only 10% are available to hunters (in and out of state) who contract with registered outfitters.

Granted, outfitters can put you onto some amazing animals, but given my funds, if I didn't live here, I wouldn't hunt here.

Last year they refunded my license fee. If I remember correctly, they kept about $20 in fees. So it was just an expensive lottery ticket for some cool mule deer hunt I wanted.

every year..i throw the hail mary.

first and only elk..we got two..was in NM...rookie season..first draw, first morning, etc.

never drew again. like i blew my lucky wad all in one place with that damn state.

Don't get me wrong. I love hunting here, but there are some issues that the State Game commission could do to level the playing field and give those genuinely interested in hunting here a better chance at success. I plan to live here a long, long time, and will put in for deer, elk, crane, and turkey every year, and hunt every year I am drawn.

The state game commission is over represented by special interests, and they over represent the harvesters...

i have a few lots in Ruidoso. i've often thought of building up a nice little cabin, so i could put in as a resident.

it was always unclear to me if that would qualify.

NM is an awesome state. just shooting at a 60mph whitewing dove flying by is almost worth the cost of admission. this year, i am putting in $50 for the long odds of drawing a valles pass..hahaha..at least the money goes to a good cause.

i used to joke..pretty much the only reason to go to church after losing my virginity was a NM elk tag. nothing else to pray for.

Yeah, I guess I never noted that because I always get my fishing license with my hunting license, so I have never seen the refund box...

They have a box where you can elect to have your hunting license refunded as well. They recommend keeping the license fee if you plan on hunting spring turkey, which i plan on n trying yhis year.
