Well guys I am on my way to the opposite corner of the state for the October ibex hunt on the Florida mountains (the rock) near Deming, NM. Something inspired me to try to do a live hunt since I think I'll have service most of the time. This thread might be pic heavy since I can snap pics better than type.

Today I'll travel from Roy to Deming and then to the base of the mountain. The plan tomorrow is to pack about 3 gallons of water to a camp spot near the top then come down and take camp and gear for 5 days the next day. It's supposed to be in the 80s for highs and mud 50s for lows so it will be warm. I'll try to update as often as I can during the cat and mouse game in some rugged country.

Sorry for the let down but it seems service isn't as good as I thought it would be. I just figured with a bunch of cell towers a few miles away I would have data for sure. So instead of a live hunt I'll post updates as I can.

Yes it's an archery hunt.

I arrived at my camp spot pretty late Wednesday night and set up the Cimarron on the most level least rocky place I could find. There were so many rocks and mesquite I couldn't get two of the tent stakes to stick so instead of fighting it any more I just called it good, at up the cot and went to bed. The next morning the stakes went in easy! It's crazy how some things are so much harder in the dark when tired.

Yesterday I took 3 gallons of water, shelter, bivy, and tripod to the top and stashed them in some rocks. Did a little glassing while there and found a group of bullies and nannies about a mile south of me. There were 4 or 5 that I'd sling an arrow at if given a shot. One nice white Billy with good curve stood out alive the others.
No good pics of them since I didn't even bring a spotter.

After glassing a little more I made my way back to the truck a little over a mile away and 2000 feet down. As it got dark I got to watch a great lightning show all across the western sky as a big storm headed my way. It sprinkled off and on for a couple hours and let loose just when I feel asleep. Laying there in the tent while it rained like crazy I got to wondering how much water was running under my bed. Turning on the headlamp confirmed a sheet of water under the cot and across most of the tent. There was nothing I could do so I just laid there while the rain and wind beat the heck out of the tent sides.

I dozed off a couple times when it slowed but not long each time. Around 130 the wind picked up even more and the saturated ground lost grip of one tent stake so that side started flapping. I speed on my boots and crawled out to beat it back in. As soon as that one was secure the two up wind stakes came out and the tent came down quick throwing both stakes in the dark. I wrestled with it for a minute and threw in the towel. No way I could get it fixed in the wind on my own! I grabbed everything and threw it in the truck as soon as I could. After some re arranging my new bed was made in the back seat of the pickup. It was a good move in the end cause the wind picked up even more and it continued to reason for another few hours.

This morning I woke to some awesome scenery as the clouds rolled in and out of the mountains and sun peaked through in places.

After the storm last night imade the decision not to go to spoke camp today and let it dry out some first. Climbing and sleeping in mud just doesn't sound smart. The next few hours glassed the hill sides then found some ibex coming over the hill right in front of the truck a half a mile away

. They milled around for about two hours and finally made their way up the hill a ways when they herd a razor coming up the trail a mile away. The guys in the razor have the same tag and seemed like great guys. We talked a while then we all decided to head down the hill to look around the mountain some more.

What happened..........?

Having been there twice in Jan. I'm imagining that you left scratching your head. I know I did.

1 shot at 70 was the best I could ever do with a combined 30 days on the rock. That was on a 12" Billy or kid depending on how you look at.
