Following this thread. Was down scouting and getting lay of land during Thanksgiving. Headed down with brothers and dad for 10 days how to harvest a few roads with the old stick n string. Good luck all and see you out there!

Sportsmanbarandgrill on IG has posted a bunch of photos from the youth hunts in unit 2. Some pretty nice deer and lots of happy young hunters.

Yeah there were quite a lot of big bucks killed there

They changed the youth season date. 2B has had a youth hunt for a number of years. Some good deer killed this year, but not all of them. If you get off the roads, you should find some.

Man the deer hunting has sucked up here..have only seen one descent buck

I was in 5A over the holidays. Lots of good bucks around. Most I've seen on our ranch in years. Talked to a friend in Durango today and there are no deer around--they've moved South.

Yeah there were not near as many deer as there have been previously up there, seems as if the youth rifle hunt during the rut really hosed us bow hunters

Seems like wrong sort of thing to put an emphasis on for a young person starting out.

Maybe NM Game and Fish determined that more youth hunts needed to be in a place with high opportunity and success rate, not necessarily trophy potential. Unit 2 provides that as well.

The problem is that they gave way to many tags as they do in most units, they are quite possibly going to hurt the mule deer population very bad here in New Mexico as they already have in 2b, my guide who guides up here yearly has never seen it this bad and has already contacted game and fish about the situation.

There is some joint management in 2 units. There was collaborative study and plan in place in regards to migration of deer and elk, in regards to Co NM and the reservation. I think it ran though 2017.
I could see how incressing the quota to include those youth tag could rub someone from north of the line the wrong way.

Regarless i think there was better choices to hold a youth hunt than one of the very few trophy units in NM

Pronghorn would've been a better choice, IMHO.
