Let the youngster shoot a Nilgai cow with the 6 creed (Unknown Munitions 105 Berger Hybrid). We first ranged her at about 450ish yards and cut the distance to about 175 yards she was slightly 1/4’ing away. Lil Bill settled it and took the shot she ran less than 15 yards before pilling up.

We have killed a bunch of big bulls with 6.5 PRC W/156 Berger's. Bigger isn't always better

The first time I went I tried to convince the outfitter to let me use my 7-08AI. He said no and I ended up using my 300WM. I got mine on the first day and carried the 7-08AI for the rest of the trip for targets of opportunity (pigs mostly) while my buddies were trying to kill theirs.
After I made a 423 yard pig kill and then put down a gut shot cow at 358 yards, he conceded that I could probably kill a bull with it.
Unfortunately, he still wouldn't let me use it the next year either.

There is a weird thing in Texas about the 300 Winchester these days, it used to be the 338 Winchester that was called the Texas Magnum. A lot of Texas outfitters are convinced that nilgai weigh 850 pounds and take a 460 Weatherby.

Know meat hunters using 223s for headshots off a tractor, son shot a cow in the head at 20 yds with a 7-08 spot and stalk, shot mine with a 308 at 300+ yds with a 150gr sst, one shot and down. The usual guided nilgai hunt is to drive around in a hunting truck or buggy and shoot from the truck at 300+ yds, some do ground hunt with spot and stalk.

Both of the Nilgai hunts I have been on, despite the stupidity of what gun I was forced to use, were very enjoyable. It was much like African hunting in that we were on a very large ranch (over 20000 acres) that was divided into about 5000 acre pieces (low fence with cattle guards on the roads). We would drive around and spot for the groups of animals and if we spotted one, the guide and shooter would get off the vehicle and put a stalk on. Every once in a while we would bump into a group near the road and the shot would be taken from the vehicle, but it was rare (at least on the Nilgai and Waterbuck... pigs were a different story).

I guided on most of the big south Texas nilgai ranches and while the 30cal rule has some merit, I usually didn’t strictly follow the guidelines
I found a .264wm , .270 , 7mm , 30-06 , 8x57 , 303 British with bonded bullets
Perfectly fine for nilgai within their respective power bands and shot placement
I also have seen some nilgai hit with 7mm mag & 7STW that looked like perfect hits that where dead lost , so a ranch will hedge bets with 300wm because it’s a business and some clients just don’t know how to handle a rifle or use logical

Where are some good places to hunt them? It seems like the King ranch day hunts, and then have enough cash on you to shoot two is the most bang for the buck.

Beyond they get stupid expensive fast. A lot of money for 8 or 9 inches of horn.

Many good places to go hunt nilgai , king , Kennedy, mariposa, horn fin feather
I am not fancied with going on a night IR scope hunt but they are the cheapest

Mariposa is interesting because of the whitetail combos. I guess the king is the same if you can get them to let you book a deer hunt. I have tried many times years ago and stop trying.

I agree on the night hunts. Lots of folks are selling them but I’m not a fan. Dos Amigos and I both can point you in the right direction.
I’ve guided nilgai hunts on 2 of the largest low fence ranches in the state as well as good, solid high fence country. It’s one of the last really good, “affordable” hunts in North America in my opinion. It can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be.
