As recommended I'm using Nikwax on my new Crispi boots instead of the usual Openauf's.
Been using it all winter and have to say I'm not that impressed with it's water shielding ability.Yes it works when freshly done but after a day or two in the snow it's like they were never done.
What are you guys experiencing with this product?

Used nikwax for many years on my meindls and others and would spray techtron over the nikwax. This helped to reduce the number of applications as it dies not tend to last long. Have gone to obenhaufs and currently using on my kennetreks and crispis. Did have the rand fail on the crispis but cannot say it was due to obenhaufs. Now using freesole on rand to reduce premature failure on rand.

Grangers Paste or Toilet Bowl Wax. . .Bear grease (rendered bear lard) is good too if you can get your hands on some.

I'm using it now per boot manufacturers recommendations and I'm good with it so far. Given how easy it is to apply I'm gonna stick with it for a while.

Says to wet the leather first before applying? This my be nice for treating a pair of boots that have already wet out.

Yes you need to moisten the leather and help relax and open the pores. Then the spay on Nix Wax or Grangers. It doesn't last as long as a paste wax or heavier oil but doesn't clog the pores so bad, especially if you have gore tax liner.

I'll have to try it when the boots are wet.

I used it until my tube was gone on my meindls. Same results as you fresh application usually good that day in rain or snow but day two or three leather is dry and no evidence of treatment. I don't have crispis but have been liking either of the grangers waxes so far.

I've been using the Kenetrek brand stuff that they send with their boots. However, I prefer and will continue to use SnoSeal from now on.

Good old Snow Seal always works. Boots, gloves, bottom of packs.

Been using it for 20 years. Every time I try something else, I go back to old reliable.

I found Nikwax useless and a waste of time and money. Meindl's or SnoSeal put on very heavy and allowed to sit in the hot sun to soak in, then repeated. will hold up for the better part of a two week sheep hunt for me and are what I use.

On a cardboard box by the wood stove in the winter.

Does snow seal affect the gore tex? Have a hard time understanding how some products inhibit breath ability but others don't. I am using nikwax this year for the first time, not impressed at all.

Another vote for snoseal on leather. I put nikwax on the fabric but it seems to dry out the leather. I reapply about once a month when I'm wearing them often. Lather on more than you think you need and set them somewhere warm. Keeps them waterproof enough to shed snow and dew. Leather stays incredibly supple. Bonus, snoseal smells amazing. Heavy rain or pooled water I go to rubber boots anyway.

Idahoelk I did not inquire as I used these boots to the extreme and I felt for the miles I put on they did as designed and held up well. They recommend nikwax and I chose obenhaufs.

I would assume that it would completely block up the "breathable" membrane.

My understanding of the specialized products for gore tex and the like it that their function is to actually clean the material so that it breathes again.
I've never used nikwax so can't comment

We typically recommend either the Crispi Waterproofing Cream if available or Nikwax Waterproofing Wax to treat the Nubuck leather Crispi boots. The Nikwax Footwear Duo-Pack is the best option since you get their footwear cleaning gel and the wax.

This is how Nikwax intends their products to be used-
Footwear Cleaning Gel
  1. Rinse footwear with clean water to remove loose mud and dampen surface.
  2. Press sponge applicator to break seal
  3. Apply generously over the area to be cleaned
  4. If very dirty use a brush to work in cleaner
  5. Rinse well in clean water.
Waterproofing Wax for Leather Liquid
  1. Brush off dirt with a damp cloth / apply Nikwax Footwear Cleaning Gel to clean
  2. Press sponge applicator on Aqueous Wax to break seal
  3. Apply to wet or dry leather
  4. After 2-3 minutes, wipe away surplus with a clean cloth
  5. Buff with a damp cloth to shine
Note: For light coloured leather always test on a hidden area first.
To dry never place in a confined hot area, near radiators and open fires and make sure to put newspaper in the toes of the footwear to maintain shape and remove moisture from the inside while drying.

For use on the boots constructed with Cordura like the Idaho, Wyoming, and Summit; we recommend either the Crispi Imperwass Waterproofing spray or the Nikwax Fabric and Leather Proof. The cleaning portion is basically the same. Let me know if you ever have any questions on boot treatment especially Crispi.

Note-We DON'T recommend Obenauf's or Sno-Seal since there is the possibility of it breaking down the adhesion on the rand.

[h=1]Product Care[/h]
You've committed to taking care of your feet this season with premium, handmade Italian boots from Crispi, now it's time to take care of them. You can prolong the life of any Crispi boot by cleaning and re-waterproofing them at least once a season.
We recommend removing the laces and cleaning the boot first with warm water. Make sure to get dirt out from around the stitching and lace holes. Then, using Crispi's Waterproofing Cream or Spray, apply the solution as directed to keep your boots performing at their peak.
