I’m new here, but have lurked for quite a while. I just picked up a Nikon ED 50 body for a good deal, and now comes the time to narrow down eyepieces. There’s so much out there on them, and whether to stay to a fixed (20x or 27x) vs. the 13-40x or 13-30x. The size and weight is what led me to the ED50, but with the countless options on the eyepieces, what is truly the best for backcountry utilization? My initial thought was that I’d spend most time using the 20-30x range.

Thoughts?

The MCII was nice but I’d really like to have seen the 27x wide. Ended up selling it. In my experience the fixed eyepieces on these smaller scopes really shine. With the small exit pupil higher magnification does not pull in much additional detail and a fixed mag eyepiece will almost always be better optically. I’d buy both and test side by side personally.

The single magnification eyepieces are best. They have a wide FOV and sharp from edge to edge

I really likd the 27x but the 20x is brighter.

Thanks guys for the responses. I ordered a 13-40x to try and will also try the 27x. The 20x is hard to find.

I have the ED 50 with the 13-40x MCII. It is really good, but I wish I had bought the fixed 27x. As good as the 13-40 is, I estimate that the power I use most is in the low 30's. Above 35 the image deteriorates noticeably.

only one and you may have to do some judging get the 13-40x...luxury item is the 27x, I haven't looked through one, it would be nice I suppose but I rarely use a spotter to find game, most of the time my Nikon comes out it's on a sheep hunt and I'm already on sheep found in the binos and need to start judging, the 40x is very usable on these, wide angle 'pleasure' is meaningless here, sounds like a bird watchers eyepiece...quit playin around with the girly stuff...those aren't for serious work ;)

I have the fixed 16, 20, 27 and the mc2.

Varied hunting the mc2 checks the boxes and it’s a great piece. If you where glasses, likely going to be a problem with eye relief.

The fixed have significantly more eye relief and even better fov. The 16 is stunning. I use 20 the most used and 27 in wide open. Always carry the mc2 if I need a closer look and take my glasses off.

You can find butler creek flip cap for objective end also, forget what size but mine has been wearing one forever. 13-40x the way to go. On eyepiece end I likely bastardized a rubber cup with big zip tie near body and some para cord under zip tie so it pulls pries over eyepiece end and doesn’t dangle or swing much in wind. Prolly stole the eyepiece rubber from a pair of binoculars boxes I had laying around. Whatever I did held up long time now. Thing is like 22.5 oz with caps from recollection.

Thanks for the feedback on the eyepieces. I have a 13-40 just haven't had much time behind it and always weighing other options. Might try and find a fixed 20 or 27 when they come up.

I did find this hawke case for 21$ a great protective option. My straight still fits even though it looks like it's for angled scopes.

The 27x was highly regarded for those spending more time behind them but I usually spend little time behind them for judging after I find in binos so 13-40 is the way there. Bird geeks love the 27x for example ;)

If have only 1 13-40, if have 2 then add 27, unless you’re a bird watcher which is exactly what I am when I run into anyone in back country especially gay wardens. Works ok when had blaser k95 in pieces in pack or if still in truck and binos on neck or optic on window mount...always bird watching, not hunting. ;)

Never wear camo, look like a granola, best camo there is
