Nightforce SHV 3-10X42

Anyone have experience with this scope? I’m thinking of buying one with a MOAR retical. I’m really interested in how reliable the tracking is.

I have one on my kimber 308, I have the forceplex illuminated reticle though. I had the MOAR version for awhile and really regret getting rid of it, I’m planning to get another.

They are solid, great if you want covered turrets but still want an option to dial to a longer shot. At 20oz the 3-10 shv or the 2.5-10 nxs are in a class of their own in my opinion as the lightest reliable scope you’ll find.

Setting the zero on the turrets is super easy, you just need a nickel. But there is no zero stop (downside in my opinion). If you’re shooting a flat shooting gun and not dialing past 500-600 yards though you won’t have to worry about multiple revolutions on the turret to where that could be an issue. There are hash marks that are supposed to tell you how many revolutions you have spun, but for me those marks are hard to tell and can leave you wondering. Just be careful about remembering and counting your clicks or MOA and knowing where you dialed and you’ll be fine.

The turrets are softer and are not as tactile as the nxs, or other scopes that have more audible and noticeable. But, you still feel them and it reliably dials, just something to be aware of.

I’ve flown mine to Alaska and it went on 5 total hunts last year. Have yet to adjust POI/zero on it yet. It works every time.

If you can find one with the moar reticle and side parallax get it, seems like they stopped making that model, or atleast the common retailers are not carrying that one anymore.

I’m on my second shv. Won’t be getting rid of this one.

Thanks guys, I’m still looking around but I’m almost sold, I have an NXS that I really like on a bigger rifle. This scope will go on my 6.5 creed that I use for backpacking. I want to keep the weight down but I also want the option to dial in my dope reliably.

I have the 4-14, I think only real difference from NXS is the turret system, can't imagine you could go wrong with any NF product.

I just recently picked one up off eBay for a 300 win mag, glass is great and adjustments feel rock solid. I wanted something that would be absolutely bulletproof and was willing to take the weight penalty over something like a vx3i.

I'm seriously considering the NX8 1-8, to add to my NXS 2.5-10. I was originally considering the SHV for the covered turrets, but 1x power is pretty sweet in the woods.

I’m currently in the process of switching all of my hard use rifles to the SHV 3-10 scopes, I just don’t think you can do better for the $$$. I do t do much dialing at all and I rarely shoot past 3-400 and have very little desire to shoot past 500. My kimber is still less than 6.5lbs with the shv, I love how compact they are. The forceplex with the illuminated reticle is absolutely awesome, I love that scope.

I’ll also add that I was very interested in the NXS 3-10 but just don’t see the need for dialing and fancy reticles with a SFP scope. As long as I’m using SFP, I’ll stick to a basic “plex” reticle and not dial much at all. That’s just my opinion/experience. If I’m worried about dialing I’ll have a FFP scope with a mil for reticle....like an SWFA 3-9 or 3-15.

If you can find the old IHR reticle that’s a good one. 3MOA sub tensions on the center cross hairs and I think 5MOA on the thicker lines...makes it easy to do some wind calls and maybe even some holdover if you’re not going to dial. Still a super simple reticle though.

It's the same line of scopes it would stand to reason that they should track the same.

The Night Force SHV 3-10x42 scope is my go to scope for plinking and Varmint shooting. It rugged and repeatable just like all of my Night Force scopes and it has the same glass as the NXS. I also think it has a brighter illuminated reticle in my opinion than the NXS. I have the center illuminated model and love it. I love the the turrets are capped, but I wish it did have an Elevation Turret with a zero lock…but hey you can’t have it all for that price point.

FYI, it is not a sealed scope. The eye cups are necessary to protect it from water. Also check out the warranty on this particular scope. Water damage is not covered.
