Newfoundland, better early or late?

Hunted Oct 5-11th last year. Bulls were still going pretty hard. Killed a 46.5 inch 18pt bull on day 1. Saw several others. That bull was with 6 cows.

Mother Nature is always fickle. I certainly wouldn’t let my experience last year bother or influence any decisions! There are many factors involved. My outfitter overhunted the camp I was in. Weather and moon phase also play with the rut.

Any week is a good week when it comes to Newfoundland! In my opinion, barring moon phase and weather that is a prime week. I’ll be hunting moose in Maine almost those same dates.

that's another reason i wanted an early hunt. I didn't want the chance of being in a camp where they'd shot or ran off everything already

I’ve used Conne River and Next Ridge. 2 totally different experiences with Conne River being far more superior.
I think that I could have read reviews on all outfitters, good and bad until the end of time. I had many that I'd emailed or left voice mails. Many never replied, or replies were short, sporadic, and sometimes unfriendly. Honestly it came down to just a couple choices. I only hope that it turns out well.

The more I read, the happier I am with the dates that we chose for 2027. Slightly earlier than what I wanted but I called in a killed a big bull on the 19th of September one year. I would have preferred that next week because of the moon being darker, but I guess I can love with it. Especially since we are rifle hunting.

I have been quite a few times, I think peak rut is sept 22-0ct 8 or so. A lot of the outfitters will run groups of hunter through there camps from early-mid Sept to late October/early November. I think peak rut is sept 22-0ct 8 and the best bet. Earlier and you can get hot weeks with less movement and later and things get picked over.

There are outfitters who have there own hunting areas and only fly in one set of hunters a year and then later also works. as things don't get as picked over.

Because of my awful experience with the outfitter on my "one time only" hunt, I've booked a second hunt with a different outfitter, and this time a week later, September 25th. Fingers crossed.
