Hello all, I've got some beginner arrow tuning questions. My bow is a 45 lb samick sage @ 26" draw and I'm tuning some Easton epic shafts @ 29.5" using standard inserts and 175 gr field pts. Total arrow weight is 410 gr currently. I've got the bareshaft and fletched grouping well out to 30 yds as long as I do my part. If it matters I'm shooting 3 under with a tab. The bareshafts nock position is almost always still a touch stiff ( nock right )but again, grouping well. Should I try some 200's? I'd have to order them but no big deal. When I ran the numbers through 3rivers program before I bought the arrows the theoretical tune was using between 125 & 150 gr. points. Is there anything else I should do or look for to guarantee the broadheads I purchase will fly the same as the bareshaft is? I think I read somewhere that the bareshaft should be flying a touch weak compared to fletched but I'm new to this crap! I already see the benefits that an arrow saw and what it could bring to this process but for this first group of arrows it's point weight only for tuning. Last question, broadheads recommendations in the 175-200 gr class. Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Easiest way; use the 3 rivers FP test kit....a couple points each up to 300gr.

I would let good arrow flight dictate your BH weight....

I don’t really worry about the nock orientation. I have good results with a bare shaft that impacts with fletched arrows and just slightly weak. The final test for me is I will shoot 3 arrows at 30 yards one broadhead, one field point, and one bare shaft several times Keeping all arrows in a group inside of the heart/lung area on a 3D target.

Excellent, thanks for the replies. Heavier field points are on the way. Concerning broadheads, I just wasn't sure if they have the same flight as fields due to their overall length. Seems like weight further away from the nock would alter flight.
I made some collars last night out of some old aluminum 2018 arrows that weigh 20 gr each. They fit perfectly over the epic shafts. I'll shoot them today to see how much if at all they change things up. I always used collars while shooting GT kenetics and Easton FMJ with the wheel bow and even I had a hard time breaking those arrows! Thanks again for the direction.

^^^ You are correct that the longer Broadhead will have an effect on arrow flight vs field points. However if you are in the middle of the proper spine for your setup you shouldn’t notice it. If you are on the end of too stiff or too weak you may see the effects during arrow flight and point of impact deferences. Final tuning should be done with the BH that you plan to use. If my BHs are flying true I usually have the same results with FPs.

Great, thanks! The arrows are 600's @ 29.5" so I assume they'll be close to weak with the 200 gr points. Thanks again!

Ok so last question from me in this particular category. With the vpa broadheads, which is more forgiving, the 2 or 3 blade and vented or non vented?

I've shot both in non vented and can't say one is more forgiving than the other, or I'm not good enough to tell the difference. I prefer the non vented because I feel like they make less noise in flight. The 3 blade is longer and you'll probably get better blood trails, the 2 blade is shorter but will have more penetration, both are really good heads. Hope that helps.

You're shooting close to my specs, 125 gr broadheads fly like darts for me, Zwickeys.
I would go heavier on broadheads that 125 gr, Spouse shoots the same with a 55# draw weight and they fly like darts as well.
2 blades for us, Zwickey eskimos.

Yeah, my guess is you will have to drop down to a lighter BH....

I shoot the VPA 150gr 2 and 3 blade...and have the 3 blade in vented and non vented. I don't notice a difference between the 3 in my recurve.

The vented 3 blade [bigger than the non vented- but I like that] does have a little more drop than the straight 2 blade at 60yds in my compound.
