I'm brand new to archery and I'd like to look into purchasing a thumb release. I currently use an index release, but I find the trigger to be too hot and I get some skin irritation if I practice shooting for a long time. Someone at the range let me try his Carter Target 4 and I thought it was comfortable and improved my shooting.

Should I stick with Carter (thinking about a Wise choice) or look at other brands? I'm reading that the UV button is also good? Can I really go wrong if I stick with the main brands?

you can’t go wrong sticking with the main brands (Carter, UV, Stan, Nock 2 It, etc.). You will find people who like each and who don’t like each. They are all quality releases that will get the job done so it comes down to what you like the best and personal preference. My preference is the nock 2 it and Carter wise choice. I did not like the customization of the Stan (was constantly changing things) and was not a fan of the UV due to the longer neck.

I have relatively large hands, is there any kind of standard sizing? 2 finger vs 3 finger?

The 2 finger vs 3 finger is more about preference for what type of release you want to shoot. Some like 2 finger. Some like 3 finger. I use both since the Nock 2 It (2 finger) and Carter wise choice (3 finger) are basically the same thing. I have seen some videos and posts where people talk about how with a 2 finger there is less influencing the shot. In terms of sizing, I know Stan and UV have a few different sizes (medium/large/XL) and you will need to figure out what is best fit for your hands. Hopefully some others on here can point you in the right direction. I had a large Stan once and it fit in my hands well.
