Hi,
Ive recently bought my first bow, i live along way from a archery dealer so i brought one online.
I got a hoyt torrex and really enjoying this hobby despite steep learning curve. I try practice every day morning and evening.
Im still trying to find my draw lenght, by calculations its 27.5 this gave me lots of pin float and was easy to pull back at 70# but thought it could be to short so I increased draw length to 28.5 and now i can target a object without so much float, feels so much nicer but harder to pull back so i dropped poundage to 65# till i get used to it. i can straighten my forearm out now too as a lot of YouTube videos illustrated. anchor points feel good, ear lobe, jaw line, nose on string...
Ive no idea if im doing it right? but if i shoot better it should be ok? i can get good groups out to 40m even robin hooded a arrow working on my form(so hilly here i cant shoot longer here to test).
Am i doing this right?
Thanks in advance!

It's worth the time and $$$ to take it to a shop who will tune/setup it to you. I cannot stress this enough.

im over 1000k round trip away mate, not a option. im sure ill meet other archers here once it cools down, the tourist will flock up here... wish i could sometimes, but ill work it out like we did before shops

Sounds like you’re doing good if accuracy is good and you’re enjoying it. The more you shoot and continue to learn and fine tune your form and equipment, the less important it is to have someone tell you what it should be. I started out like you and just shot a lot and changed things as I learned more. Accurate shooting is the hard thing, slight tweaks are easy.

If you're hitting where you're aiming, you're doing something right! Keep on practicing, and if you're going to adjust things, only adjust one thing at a time and see how that change feels.

If you end goal is hunting, I'd suggest a slightly shorter draw length than it being slightly too long. Shooting uphill/downhill will be easier with a shorter draw length than a longer one.

A few YouTube resources that really helped me get back on track with shooting and working on my bow are:
  • Nock On Archery's (John Dudley) School Of Nock. John has a free playlist on YouTube with a bunch of tutorials for how to shoot and building up your shooting endurance. John also has a ton of how to videos for working on your bow.
  • Podium Archer - Since it sounds like you'll need to work on your bow, he has a lot of how-to videos for bow setups.

thank you for replying!

my wingspan is 69", thats 27.5 but felt too short, i couldn't straighten forearm either creating heaps of pin float as i was using muscles not my frame im learning?
now draw length at 28.5 it feel so much nicer, feel i could go another 0.5inch longer but happy i think where it is now?
its easy shooting up and down hill, i practice in hilly terrain, no flat spots here.

ive been busy watching lots of YouTube thanks for tips! i had to buy a press, draw board, brought arrow making gear and spent loads more than i should have so i can do my own work on bow and ensure quality.

really enjoying this hobby, shooting arrows at targets is so addictive!

thanks again
