Newberg says a $40 elk tag (or whatever it cost) is a $25,000 elk tag for residents.

Can you show where you're getting data that justifies a broad brush stroke to say that residents on average are paying $20-40k a year more than neighboring flat states? Thats where the majority of NR's are coming from. Or is that just your financial situation?
Cost of living in the mountain states is substantially higher than it is in the Midwest and east, unless you're living in a metro area with inflated property values. The data is there, is your Google machine broke?

Western deer and elk hunting and the west in general have been whored out to the point that it’s just not cool anymore.
I have no issue telling people I’m a squirrel hunter, but it embarrasses me to tell people that I dabble with western hunting to the point that I don’t even bring it up in outdoor related conversations.
I’m so sick of seeing my fellow millennials dressed in $500 outfits, toting $1000’s of dollars of gear with 5 of their friends filming themselves and talking about how uncomfortable they’re making themselves and how far they’re pushing their limits.
You sat on your ass and tricked a goat, Brady. It’s not that impressive.
I hope everyone who’s sick for their brown can draw a tag, “e-scout” 😆, put on their fancy outfits and congregate at the trailheads every September and look super cool.
Make your own adventure.
Western hunting is #PLAYED

I didn't listen/watch the Newberg stuff but it ain't that expensive to live in Cheyenne, Boise, Bozeman, insert any big blue city in Western states... It's not like every R hunter has to buy a place in Jackson Hole or something. Both my older boys lived in Cheyenne for several years, they made good money for what they did, one took a pay cut to get back to Texas and the other came back without a job lined up but he did end up making more with a lucky score I hooked him up with.
Boise is absolutely off the rails price wise. Comparing Cheyenne to Boise is a STRETCH. Bozeman cost of living has skyrocketed in the past few years as well. It was going up well before the covid crowd moved in.

I’m just waiting for the law of diminishing returns to prevail when hopefully western hunting reaches so much expense that people just stop and we go back to some semblance of normal…...

That's probably not going to happen.

Google is working great for me, but the data I’ve seen and others have posted doesn’t add up to the 20-40k claimed. Now you try.

I haven't read every post on this thread. But for me personally, in my current remote working role, moving to a similar sized WY town would not increase my cost of living. WY has the following benefits over Iowa:
  • No individual income tax (I currently pay 5.7% in Iowa)
  • WY has an average combined state and local sales tax rate of 5.36% (Iowa sales and use taxes are both 6% and most all counties have a local option sales tax of 1%. We pay 7% where I live.)
IME, groceries are not materially different price-wise.

Real-estate can be expensive in WY, but try to purchase a recreational/hunting property in Iowa and hold on to your butt. If it has any whitetail habitat you're gonna pay a huge premium.

My neighbor just listed a very modest 1,600 sq 3 bed in need of some work in Cheyenne for $325k last Friday. 17 offers later they accepted an offer on it for $365k, on Saturday, 24 hours it was for sale. Nobody around here seems to care about price or interest rate still

I wouldn't bother researching Bozeman because I'm not a hippie from California wanting to move there, just picked names out of a hat and yes looking back that one should've been obvious. Let's pretend I said Pueblo instead, one can always find affordable housing in Pueblo and work in Colorado Springs for higher pay.
Good grief...

you can name your price for acreages in this part of Iowa right now. Recently a run down 750 sq 2 bed/1 bath with 5 acres and a crappy barn sold for $200k.

Austin, you couldn't sell a house for asking price two years ago. I had a buddy list a place for $400k, ended up selling for somewhere in the $700's. This was a regular house with a 1/4 acre lot.

Come on guys, he’s never made one cent off any of his outdoor endeavors or his 10 employees, free truck and thousands of hours of film.

Thats perhaps a good point if it holds up in relation to other states—example, many federal taxes are kicked back to the states via a formula. Pittman robertson is an example, it funds a third of my state’s DNR, but it’s federal money allocated to the states based on a formula because much of that $ came FROM the state. Highway spending is similar. There’s tons of examples. I dont think it’s a 1:1 kickback so it may not be a perfect analogy—sounds like MT is a winner in this regard—but at a minimum it’s not like any state doesnt have a significant % of their budget paid for in matching federal $ and similar—some more, some less, but it’s always there. My guess is federal highway $ and similar allocated based on mileage in the “national interest” in having a nationwide transport system accounts for many rural/larger states budgets looking like that. Not sure if its super relevant to this or not.

The allocation depends on the party to which your Senators belong and which party is in control.

You know what's funny about parts of this thread anyway. I chose to uproot my family, move 1,000 miles for the company I work for, then get 4 promotions to get to where I am financially, plus live in a pretty kick ass area. Anyone who would rather spend time crying on the Internet about how others have it better might want to move to a different country where socialism and communism are welcome. Otherwise take all this time your spending b#tching and get out there and kick some ass and do something about your chit situation.

Socialism and communism? You mean like other states being forced to pay expenses for states that can't support themselves?

He's probably gonna circle around to saying that non-residents deserve the same tag allocations as residents because like 1% of their tax money goes to Federal Lands.
