New York Commie Workaround

Sitting here bored, thought of something kinda funn...

I'm from PA and I know all about the laws of NY concealed carry. Basically you can't do it unless you're transporting through the state and lock it up and don't stay overnight blah blah blah...

That being said, I don't feel like getting a felony so I don't carry when we go to Lake Placid every winter for a ski trip.

But I have a weird insecurity where I feel like I'm naked without a firearm of some sort.

So could I just bring a shotgun, keep an orange vest in the trunk and IF I ever got searched or questioned, tell the officer yeah I'm going grouse hunting for a couple days after skiing? I don't see why not, especially since I might actually like to do that someday. I'd be happier knowing I have a double barrel with me than nothing at all. Just curious what others think it it's legal and if it's worth the hassle. Obviously it's stupid you can't just carry there but not much I can do about that.

2- Some combination of how useful is an unloaded shotgun in the trunk/maybe learn that it's okay to not have a security blanket?

3- The odds of a LEO ever finding it seem to be approximately zero. IF they found out it seems about 50/fifty that it would be a non issue/a lot more questions. Add some hunting boots/chaos.

I used to drive a semi truck from California to Buffalo NY and always had a shotgun with me. I got searched once in Arkansas and once in NY and both times they said a shotgun was ok and I was on my way. Carried it in the sleeper. In NY it was two state troopers and they were D heads!! if they could have busted me they would have but it was legal.

Hmmm. Lived in NYC and the area for a long time. Moved to PA a while ago. Upstate is a lot more permissive than NYC, Westchester and Long Island, and around Albany.

On body carry is going to be a no-no. Be very careful about what you carry and how many bullets are in magazines and what the capacity of those magazines are. I had some buddies that allegedly were going to a USPSA match in a state north of NY and were in a fairly bad one car accident. The NY state trooper saw their shooting bags, asked if there was anything in them he wouldn’t want to find (hi cap magazines) told them to get someone to come remove them from the scene.

I would not tell you to carry concealed there. I would not tell you to carry in your car. NY has some carve outs for transporting guns to and from hunting, ranges and organized shooting competitions.

Not that you asked, but be careful about flying through NY airports with firearms. Years ago, I was heading to NOLA to help out days after their big hurricane. I lost a nice sig 9mm to an anti gun DA (had to surrender it to be destroyed as part of plea deal) in NYC when I was grabbed in JFK by an over zealous port authority officer for a gun that was in a locked hard case in my checked bag per TSA rules. That whole episode cost me a lot of $ on lawyers and fines.

It's pretty bad when they violate the Federal interstate firearm transportation law. They will still arrest you for transporting handguns or "assault" rifles even if they are properly locked and stored per federal law.

I carry a Kel-Tec bullpup single magazine 12ga shotgun in my motorhome. First few rounds are rubber slugs..the rest are the real deal. A motorhome is considered your home.

What resorts do you recommend? We usually go to Whiteface and love it. Never made it to Vermont but thought about it.

Snowshoe is only 250 miles from you and Killington is 500 miles.

I have not skied at either in decades but both were terrific back when nobody used a snowboard.

Nothing wrong with whiteface, its a fun mountain, but if this is an issue for you there are other options. Whiteface is not known for snow conditions though, if you catch it right it can be good but snow conditions are often “firm” compared to most VT areas. Vermont in general you’ll find more softer snow and more people skiing off trail or in gladed areas, so in many cases the advanced skiing involves narrow tree run more so than wide open slopes…those are there too just not so different from anywhere else. Within Vt it depends what you are after, there’s some variety in snow, terrain and vibe across VT. Jay Peak is a personal favorite, and likely not much further than IcefaceWhiteface depending on exactly where you are coming from (edit--that's incorrect, it adds about an hour and a half+ drive time most likely), although there’s no “lake placid” 10 minutes down the road. A lot of people like Smuggs as far as a lower key atmosphere and with kids, its not so different feeling than whiteface as far as base lodge vibe, etc although its laid out very differently. Stowe and sugarbush both have more of a ski-town vibe, stowe with more of the resorty shopping, etc, and both are pretty near waterbury which has enough local breweries and beer to drown a regiment, local beer being a major draw to the area. killington / Pico is massive and can be crowded but spreads people out on the hill when theyre fully open and can also be great skiing after a noreaster storm. Mad River Glen is very close to sugarbush, but is intentionally low key with very few amenities, but for an advanced skier can be fantastic if the snow is good—if the snow isnt good dont bother though. Some of the southern vt resorts are good too although that's a bit out of my wheelhouse. Theres also a bunch of smaller more local resorts that can be fun to mix in. Also, several of the above are pretty close to each other so you can stay in one area and ski multiple mountains through a week or a weekend. If not being able to carry is a problem for you, VT has constitutional carry so that would be a non-issue.

And yes, snowshoe, surprisingly if you arent from that area, can be great. Ive never skied there but a number of well-travelled friends that would know better have and raved about it. Its in the wrong direction though. What I dont know is how consistently it is good, my friends went there for specific storms when they knew it would get hammered with snow.
