New Weatherby Cartridge

This is actually looking pretty sweet for a Tikka build. Have almost ordered a 25-284 like a dozen times over the last few days so I am glad I held off. 25-06 case is just a bit long and a 25-284 is just a bit short to squeeze out the full potential of a standard bolt face Tikka. I like it!

It’s a smart move. The only SAAMI fast twist 25 is the Creedmoor, but tons of hunters think anything Creedmoor is gay. All the other bore diameters are saturated, but a fast twist 25 is a wide open market with the new bullets out there. Hammer bullets are already loaded in Weatherby factory ammo, so if this is indeed a 25 RPM, I would anticipate some LOOONG hammers being loaded for it, and those require up to a 1/7.5 twist, such as the 127HHT. Hornady has already said they won’t do a 25PRC, so again, the market is ripe for a SAAMI high speed fast-twist 25.

If they really want the cartridge to be a success, they need to allow other rifle companies to chamber it.

We shall see.

I will say that if it's a 25 rpm, if the ballistics are similar to a 6um or 6prc, I could be persuaded to dive into the 25. I would like a screaming hot 6, but nothing is available in factory form and I don't want to deal with fire forming shoulder or neck donuts, or necking down, and would like factory ammo options.

But last I looked, the 25cal bullet options aren't as good and reliably available as the 6, at least for what I want. Maybe that's changed recently.

I’d say there’s a pretty decent selection now. Berger 133 and 135, Hornady 128 ELDX and 134 ELDM and then there’s the new 133-135 TMK that’s coming from Sierra. Plus whatever big monos there are out there. There’s enough options that I think there’s a place in the market for a big, fast .25 cal to come out.

You guys should bombard Weatherby with email requests to sponsor Rokslide so that @Justin Crossley can properly review the newness.
I would be happy to burn up a barrel or two.

Although I will say I have been moving away from the ultra-fast, overbore cartridges over the last couple of years. I am pretty satisfied with what I get out of the little 6.5 and 25 CM these days.

I will very disappointed if it’s another 7mm which a lot of people are saying… the 7 of 1-7 release date.

They already make 25CM barrels so a faster 25 makes sense there too, it would just be a different chamber.

It’s going to be a 25. There are YouTubers and gun writers dropping hits about a new 25 cal all over the place. The only question is the case size. It’s going to be a rebated rim case. Weatherby’s RPM case is just a lengthened .284 case. Weatherby’s teaser pics show the case next to the RPM lineup and it is slightly shorter. So it’s going to be real 25-284’ish.

That sure looks like a 25 cal bullet to me. So the 7mm thing is out.

“we’re running a 133 grain Berger at 3k out of a 24” barrel”. Claiming that is a conservative factory load and handloaders can squeeze more out of it with a case capacity of 72.5.
