I have started to look at new trucks to replace my Ram 1500 two wheel drive.
It's been a good truck but the warranty is about up.

So the trucks I have looked at an f250 but don't really think I need that big of truck.

Also looked at a Colorado and Ranger.

Leaning toward the ranger because it seemed to be a comfortable truck and has hi and low range transfer case.

Colorado was nice but seemed to be more noisy and has "all wheel drive"instead of true 4wd.
Both trucks are 4cyl turbos automatics.
This truck will be going to be used for deer, elk, antelope hunting.
Does any one have any long term use of one of these.

My wife has a 2019 Ranger with about 110,000 miles on it and hasn't had a problem. It's been a great truck for her.

Why are you not considering a new 1500 RAM or the F150?

I don't really get the midsized truck market. They cost almost as much as a half ton and get similar fuel mileage. Might as well just stick with a half ton that is actually useful as a truck.
I agree, but may as well get a 3/4 ton. 3/4 ton is my limit for comfort and being able to drag a trailer.

If you are cross shopping compact trucks and 3/4 tons you need to do a little more soul searching what you really need the truck for. There is no way I want a 3/4 ton unless towing 7K+ routinely. I also don't want a small truck unless I have a space requirement.

I work literally 2 miles from my house so I was thinking a small truck so it wouldn't kill me in gas.
If I am being honest with myself I really want a f250 super duty. It is just my wife and I, the kids are grown up.
So my wife wants a camper and I want an off road jeep to go to different off road parks.

I am 57 my wife is 58 so this will probably be one of the last trucks I buy, so I kinda think the aluminum body ford would be best so it won't rust out in a couple years and look new longer.

The tubos kinda worry me. I guess it is because I don't understand them.
That's why I haven't considered the new ram or f150.

Beater daily driver - honda toyota car - there is your good MPG
GAS F250 or chevy/dodge- tow the jeep/camper or use for hunting. Don't get a diesel if your commute is 2mi.

I had an F150 ecoboost - never missed a beat. Same with a 20 Ram 2500 I had.

With newer diesels, Its usually not the turbo itself. Its usually the stuff around it that causes failure in the turbo and other areas

I dropped from full to mid size. 90% of the time it’s great. Empty nesters and I like the extra MPGs when traveling with wife and extra garage space. 10% of the time I regret it when my son comes home and wants to hunt out of layout blinds, load up decoy bags, take girlfriend hunting with the uncomfortable back seat. We can always take my wife’s 4runner but I miss the Ram. I’ll replace it with a full size soon. That 10% is really important to me.

I would stay away from the 4 cylinder turbos. They have a bad reputation with lots of problems and a lot of mechanics are saying to stay away from them.

Just bought a 2025 Chevy 1500 Trail Boss. So far I really like it. Hopefully it will last awhile as I plan on this being my last truck I buy (I’m 66 yrs old). My last truck was a 2011 Ram 2500 diesel and it was starting to become a money pit. Considered a Tacoma but just wasn’t big enough

Mac, I bought a Ram 2500 w/5.9 Cummins in '07 and still have it. I had a 1500 prior and would never go back to the 1500. I might go back to gas in a 2500 now that my horses are gone, but the 3/4 is so much more robust that it is worth it in my mind.

BTW, I also have a 2017 Wrangler Sport as my runabout vehicle.

These newer trucks are not lasting like older vehicles. I wouldn’t bank on this being your last truck at only 57 years old unless you barely use it.

I had a 2019 Colorado mini Duramax. Bought with 40,000 and traded at 130,000 in 2 years. Best mountain truck I’ve had by a long shot. I’m admittedly super tough on trucks in the hills. Took that thing on lots of trails that are more side by side trails than for trucks. Never missed a beat. The only “issue” I had was a recall thing on the def system. Dealership took care of that and it was good. Because chest complaint was I have a growing family (Wife, 3 year old, and 1 year old with 2 dogs) and it was rough taking the whole family, but we’d make it work. And the other problem I had was I own a concrete company I’m trying to grow and the Colorado isn’t a heavy duty work truck. However, for a midsize, it towed great. I hauled 4 seater Can Am Mavericks fairly often and the little thing handled the trailer and load great. I averaged 28-35 mpg on the freeway empty and 13-16 towing the trailer. It was a super comfortable rig for up to 3 people, but gets real tight after that with gear after that. If you want a midsize I highly recommend the Colorado.

I ended up trading it on a 2020 3500 Duramax, and that has been a sweet truck so far. I got it in November and have put just under 10,000 miles on it. Super comfortable, decent on dirt roads, but I WON’T be going to the same places the Colorado could go without a dirt bike or four wheeler in the back. It’s way better to take the family, and for work (for obvious reasons). Hope this helps your decision based on what your needs are.
