New Truck - Ford Raptor Or ?

Do you like the smartcap?
I don't know yet. I don't think its worth the cost, but they're all priced far beyond their value.

  • It serves its purpose
  • It looks stellar
  • It cost me >$2500 to get it paint matched
  • It'll cost me $1200 to get automated locks
  • The existing locks were not functional below freezing temps, even when dry. I had to take a small butane torch to lock and unlock them
  • It leaks, I probably just need to retorque all the fasteners at the seams.
  • The sliding windows, tracks, and locking mechanisms are all plastics. I have serious concerns on the longevity.
  • Its weight pushed me to adding airbags
  • Its weight seemed to have helped significantly in the snow

Thanks for the detail. If you were doing it again, would you pick a different brand cap?

F150 5.0 Tremor, this coming a the original owner of an ‘11 scab raptor with 148k miles. Repairs are an air conditioner line, window motor, transfer case actuator motor, 2 sets of front brakes, one rear and on its third set of tires. Had the shocks rebuilt at 110k after a goat hunt in southern NM. My son drives a ‘21 Raptor he bought new with no repairs today. Also in the family are 2 Wild Track broncos and a F250 7.3gas. Recently drove a 2025 2.7 F150 for a week on snow in interior Alaska.
The suspension electronics on the current Raptors compared with the Tremor and the non turbo motor in the Tremor are the main points for me. Simple. I will say the rental F1504wd did not give me the seat of the pants feel driving on slick surfaces that the bronco and raptor does. The F250 7.3 with 4.30s approximate the performance of the raptor but the handling differences tightens the sphincters when you are on slick mud and snow. Ground clearance between the raptor and tremor on the lot looks about the same. You see a lot of raptors in the oil patch of Texas and NM used hard and they hold up. The filthiest, most trashed Raptors I’ve ever seen were in Carlsbad NM driven by oilfield guys.

I've never driven a truck that handles rough roads like a Raptor. I have the Smartcap on mine along with Decked drawers and it's so nice for hunting and shooting.

FYI: the 2026 F150 or Raptor with any of the turbocharged motors is going to include a particulate filter system.

Starts to make a 2025 and earlier look a lot more attractive!

Article I just found says Raptor is not getting the filter. Definitely need to buy a Raptor now OP!

Why would they change it later? The 2.7 is also exempt for some reason. My assumption is they sell more 3.5’s than 2.7’s and the raptor performance model and is a small percentage of total F150’s produced so they will still average out to whatever CARB is demanding.

So it's similar to a diesel def system I'm guessing??

I can't imagine this will last long with the easing of governmental emissions restrictions which are said to be happening.

I'm confused. You said it's not getting the filter, but I should still buy now??
I’m saying the raptor is not getting the filter so you SHOULD buy one. Someone else was implying don’t buy a F150 because the filter but the raptor is exempt.

You can buy a regular F150 and upgrade it all you want with a lift kit and tires, but it’s not going to drive like a Raptor on the rough roads. Buying all the Fox stuff maybe, but I feel like at that point, you might as well just buy a Raptor. A new F150 similarly equipped option wise is $80k.

2020 raptor owner. I didn’t know what the truck truly was until I purchased mine. I never knew anyone else in my friend circle who had one to ride in. But it is an amazingly smooth ride around town and an awesome truck for desert offroad travel. I have added rear icon springs and a Sdi E click suspension controller to further improve the ride of the fox 3.0 live valve shocks.
My previous truck was a ram 2500 that had been upgraded with the Carli and Thuren suspension parts, unfortunately it still rode like a 3/4 ton truck. I live in Nevada (think mining dirt roads) so your experience might be different than mine.

Towing with a raptor and general ride quality can be improved with different rear springs. Depending on the generation of raptor you get 1st and 2nd have leafs. Deaver or Icon make replacements for these models. The 3rd generation and newer got rear coils and 4 link for more suspension and an even better ride. All of which can be upgraded with different rated coils to meet your needs for additional bed weight.

If you have narrow trails to navigate then a side by side or 4 wheeler is the best option. I use my old trusty Honda rancher for hunting.

But obviously for a daily driver and travel to go hunting rig they are setup quite well for the task. The suspension and electronics that make these different from the regular f150 or comparable half ton trucks is really what makes them special. I think that you would need to spend some time and money to get a regular truck setup as well and then the resale value for the parts added would be a total loss on those upgrades to that vehicle. The raptors tend to hold their value quite well
