Hello everyone. Just got on the forums and looks like there is a lot of knowledge to be learned from you guys. Im a lineman from north Dakota and im heading over to the little belts, lost fork area this fall. First elk hunt for my friend I. We have been saying we were going to go for about 5 years now but seemed like one of us kept getting our wives pregnant, still not sure how that keeps happening. But anyways, if anyone has any advice or do's and dont's for that area we would really appreciate it. Thanks for accepting me to your site.

My hunting partner Redmech and I made a deal, no babies due near October for our first elk hunt. Knock on wood I wasn't worried about me as much, but he's a breeder... :D

Welcome to the forum man. Lots of great people and info here, I literally learn something new every day.

Would anyone know what to expect from the burris and lost creek area. Hoping we can get away from some of the crowds and four wheelers in the little belts. We will have an old popup camper we will be hunting out of.

We are looking at the castles also. anyone one have any advice between these two areas. Also was wondering about boots. Cant afford the $600 ones so I was wondering if anyone has tried the danners or another reasonably priced boot

Buy boots that fit and feel good on your feet. You do not have to buy $600 boots. Maybe I'm not the super hero that some guys are when it comes to hiking the mountains, but rigid stiff boots kill my feet. I've tried on a pair or two of some of the boots proclaimed to be the greatest and my feet hurt just walking around in the store. They just don't work for my feet. I may feel different on a mountain goat hunt in the rocks.
I've had good luck with Danners.
However, you need to get boots ASAP and start wearing them to break them in. Your feet will be hamburger in a new pair of boots.

Thanks hobbes! I've used the pronghorns for climbing wood poles at work and they are great. I better go and get my new pair this weekend and wear them at work for a while. Appreciate the reply, sometimes all you read about is the best of the best and nothing else extremes and it takes the wind out of your sails when you look at the price tags.

The best advice i can offer is this, if you can here the elk, raking, bugling etc move fast. Elk are big animals usually in big groups and they make a lot of noise, and move fast. Get close before you slow down and really stalk. It's not the same as stalking high country mule deer in there beds.

Boots.
I used to wear the pronghorns all the time, but they changed something in the manufacture and now don't seem to last a season, and they are a little soft if your packing heavy. The boots I've had the best luck with over the years are the vasque summit gtx's about $220.00. My new favorite is the Cabelas Miendl air Revolutions about $329.00, although they are a fairly stout boot and require a lot of break in, 20-30 miles or so.

Good luck.

Good luck out there. There are defiantly a lot of elk in that area, but you need to get some space from the rest of the people. Be careful of other hunters being close to you, i know last year a bowhunter shot another bowhunter in that area. I watched as the they tried to land a helicopter back there for him. But still there are elk. Also, they did release some Griz up there too, so if you camp in the back country keep a clean camp, its not just black bears anymore.

As for boots, go try them on and make sure they fit your feet, the little belts arent the crazy's, so you dont need the expensive boots, just boots or shoes your comfortable walking in.

Pressure has defiantly increased in the whole area due to write ups on the population of the elk and some decreased populations other places in the state. You will defiantly see other hunters and camps and so forth, just have to find places where you can escape some of that. Any main road, or trailhead will have people but you can get away from folks still.. Good luck
