I’m new to Montana and was hoping someone could shed some light on where to go shed hunting. I’m located near kalispell but don’t mind driving. I’m not looking for people’s spots just a general idea of where or a mountain range. I have onX and use it frequently so I know private property lines etc. Anything helps

Welcome to Rokslide. Kind of sounds like you are asking for peoples' spots...Good luck with that!

Call the area Bio and talk about elk winter range near you. Pay attention to regulations if that area has a closed season for access or not.

At that point, get out and glass that winter range in Jan/Feb/March for the elk. Note where the bulls are and start there when you can access those areas to shed hunt. If you can watch them all year, you should be able to figure out when they drop and pinpoint where to start looking.

That is how I suggest you get started.

I would start near the intersection of Hwy 2 and 93 and branch out from there haha. I've never been out specifically looking for sheds as I get a bigger kick out of chasing turkeys and bears in the spring time, but send me a pm if you have any questions and I can do my best to give you some ideas.

Set some cams on prospective ridges....glass from afar and be out starting early January until they drop also pack your rifle and you may have an easier time finding wolves due to the animals being grouped or coming out of the backcountry....it is like chess piecing together the location where sheds may be in a given year with snow depth often being key👍Ultimately walk a lot in the right places🥳01E002BB-9EAF-4C54-8BF8-D29B993FAB86.jpegDA9CCD5E-2EE1-4382-94AE-471853E48516.jpeg33EDC42A-3DA1-4227-A9D6-4F52823E10EB.jpeg1169A753-1EB5-44EE-969B-05C937CD3CC9.jpeg29A974B2-A750-4A69-8921-BBB107AD01B7.jpegalso get a lab and teach him to find sheds nothing cooler👊

They'll shed in their winter range areas typically. Find out where they winter, find out which areas are closed for the winter. Be ready to get in line with 100 other hunters the day the areas open up.
