New TMK announced

I’m excited for these and happy to see Sierra stepping up their game. Hopefully they shoot as good and are as consistent as Berger’s in accuracy and flight. I also hope Sierra can keep them on the shelves.
Yes to all of that! I hope the 30 cal. 220 gr. compares well with the 215 Berger.
I know I don't "need" a 300WM but hey, I need to justify having it.
I am wanting to try the 22 cal. 88gr. as well.

115 bergers and n570 is gonna be about 3125fps in an 18". H1000 and n565 were between 3040-3060fps.

When you run the numbers vs a 105-108gr and the added speed the bigger pills just don't buy you much functional yardage. They can't catch up to the medium sized pills going faster till way way out there.

If starting from scratch on action and components the 6prc makes the most sense for that 50-60gr case capacity but if you've got a standard bolt face the 6-284 is a lot of fun. I had big stock pile of 6.5-284 lapua brass from the covid days, 6.5-284 dies, and a standard bolt faced action so the choice was easy for me.
That’s faster than I would have expected. I picked up a nice used stainless .308 tikka a couple weeks ago for a donor action and I’m trying to decide what I want to build off of it. I had planned on building a 6 PRC at one point in time which is why I was thinking about just building a 6-284 with this rifle.

Indeed. And in the mountains with a first round wind call, the BEST guys I’ve ever shot with, talking guys who shoot in the mountains and in wind weekly, you can bank on closer to 2-3 MPH of error.
Makes sense, and almost makes a sighter a necessity for those long shots. Even transitioning several hills/draws in the midwest and areas protected by timber vs open can lead to several guesses to get a full wind call on long shots. There's some magic voodoo to lots of experience, but the best guys were 1-2 mph error in those situations, including me when I was shooting a lot. Looking at a mountain range makes me guess a lot more and need way more luck than a few little hills with trees transitioning to openings and back and forth. First round round hits at several hundred yards in steep terrain are no joke.

I'm going to guess, too, that you're talking about mild to moderate total wind speed - like 5-10mph.

Once the wind gets above 10mph, certainly above 15mph, in my experience everything becomes a guess.

ETA: And I am by no means a good wind caller. I know there are worlds of people better than me. I just think there's a point where most of us ought to give up and get closer.
I have not shot much at all in mountains. In hills you can do pretty well from 10-15 mph. Much more than that and I needed some time to figure it out, even when I was shooting an absurd amount. After 20 mph it became very difficult to be consistent unless the wind was very consistent and not gusting. The steeper and more cut up the terrain is, the harder it will be.

I fully understand what you are saying. I think some people dont. I'll continue to use ELDMs but am also going to try 130 TMKs in my 6.5CM Match/ Hunting Hybrid just because. If they shoot as good as the 140 M's have I might shoot the TMKs for a year.

162 ELDMs in my 7mm08 have produced borderline too big of wound channels (no such thing IMO) but those bullets have just had devastating results at all ranges.

I'd like to see what those new 185s would do out of a 7SAW with a type II chamber. Would it be fast? Nope. Would it probably slay everything 600yds and in? Absolutely. Barrel life would probably be loooong as well at those speeds.

Ive been wondering lately if anyone has barreled a 7mm08 with a twist that could accommodate 180s and what their velocities have been. Its hard to even find a load for 180s in a 7mm08, but someone has had to have done it.

Probably close to a 308 with 180s.

Search through some the 7mm08 threads and that specific combo, I seem to remember a guy who did that for his brother but maybe I’m wrong

5-10 MPH wind at the shooting position, in the mountains, is almost never also a 5-10 MPH wind at the target and is rarely blowing in the same trajectory. Luckily big game animals are quite large targets.

If a guy is calling wind to 2 MPH of error in an area he’s never shot in before (unfamiliar general tendencies, unfamiliar vegetation for queues, etc) he’s world class.

Inputting below 3 MPH of error into any probability calcs is just lying to yourself and overestimating ones abilities.
