New Show starts tonight. Surviving Alaska on Natgeo

Dang I don't get National Geo but the 6 year old is really into North America which I have been DVRing.

Highly recommend watching this show. This is 8 guys treking 3200 miles across the Alaska Wilderness with just what they can carry on their backs. Its hardcore survival they can only eat what they hunt and they compete against other teams to get to the destination. They have 72 hour excursions to get to their next point per show.
Should be good. I threw this thread up to talk about it and maybe we can learn a thing or 2. I know Luke who lives in Alaska with Becca can relate. by the way Luke and Becca have become an inspiration to me. The treks those 2 do is nothing short of amazing. Thanks for doing what you do. Lets me know the limits you can push through with and surviving out there in the great outdoors.

James

Thanks for your kind words James...just feel blessed to be able to get out and enjoy what Alaska has to offer. What's incredible is, we have hardly scratched the surface...there are so many places to explore, I doubt if we will ever come close to seeing them all....but we will keep trying anyway :)

As far as the show goes, I am pretty bummed because we don't get the Nat geo channel. I am hoping some of the episodes will be available to rent or buy through iTunes or Amazon Prime...

Fun trivia fact: I actually spent spring break in Mazatlan, Mexico with Austin Manelick from Surviving Alaska while I was in college :)

Oh reary!!! :D

Sorry you had to find out this way hon... :)

No where near as scandalous as it sounds...Austin was probably around 14 and friends with my best friends younger brother. We all spent a week at my friend's grandparents time share with their extended family....I doubt he even remembers me.

This is the show that they kicked Melissa Bachman off of because she is a hunter due to an outcry from the antis. I don't think I'll be watching because of that.

You gotta be kidding me. I've watched the first 3 shows and I love to see the country and filming but man, it's just another reality show.

Not sure if you're talking about my response or what National Geographic did about Melissa. But if its the former, no, I'm not kidding you. There are other shows that depict Alaska and it has nothing whatsoever to do with it being just another reality TV show. I don't ever plan on supporting the TV channel or buying the magazine. What they did was craven and entirely unsupportive (and even disrespectful) to the hunting community.

I was referring what they did to Melissa. In my opinion, its a pretty lame show.

at the beginning of this thread it is said that guys survive by what is on their backs and eat what they hunt. However they kicked a woman off of it for being a hunter? Sounded like something i would like to watch but not if the money falls in faulty pockets. I remain confused.

Yeah I don't get it...all these guys are hunters and all live in Alaska...does Melissa live in AK? maybe thats why they didn't want her on there as they wanted all Alaskans??

I think I caught part of this show friday while at the muffler shop in the waiting room. Scenery was great but the show is lame. Just more crap on the tube. When the guy stripped naked, hung a gold pan off a belt around his waist to cover his parts and then proceeded to wade the river up to his armpits while another guy had him on a small rope supposedly to find a good place to cross the river... well... It showed my it's just another over the top "non-reality" show. But he did keep his "uber-cool" cowboy hat on... Made for a good photo op I guess and proved to the world he's a "true Alaskan Mountain Guide tough guy".... puke....

The issue with Melissa was that she is a professional hunter. As in someone that gets paid to shoot animals for her wall and TV show, rather than her freezer. She's also kind of attactive, and you know how some people don't like pretty girls killing things. That just aint natural in some folks minds.

Don't let your wives catch you looking at her website. When the fishing or bow tuning photos go by in the slide show do not be surprized if you get a "what are you looking at!" yelled over your shoulder. In a highly conseravtive work environment you may even get in trouble for the fishing photos.

After second thoughts, and a trip through the slide show, I can see why a PETA type would want her kicked off the show. Low self esteem about your body image makes folks crazy.

That's more or less it. Melissa is a public figure in the hunting world and there are plenty of pictures and videos up of her and the game she's taken. The antis and PETA types latched onto this when the cast of the show was released, and raised hell to Nat Geo for putting a "trophy hunter" on a TV show -- regardless of the fact that Melissa is no more a trophy hunter than you or I and regardless of the fact that to "survive" in Alaska, there's a good chance someone is going to have to kill and eat an animal. Like I said, all they cared about was attacking Melissa and raised enough of a stink that Nat Geo pulled her from the show. Had any of the cast been as popular as Melissa they no doubt would have got it too. Melissa's looks I'm sure made her more of a target for them as well. To pull a hunter from a show about surviving in Alaska all because of the complaints from the anti-hunting community is pretty cowardly in my book and, regardless of who is on the show and what it's about, I don't consider Nat Geo a friend to hunters based on their actions. It was an opportunity to stand up for hunters and build on the theme of the show -- instead, to use my newly discovered phrase here on Rokslide (and I think I'm using it right), they punched the clown.
