Hello all,

I’m in the market for a safe and have become little overwhelmed with all the discussions on them. Every time I think I found one I want I get a bunch of bad reviews or don’t buy this one.

I get unless I’m spending thousands and thousands on a safe, residential safes are just “security containers”. I’m mostly wanting to secure everything in one location and keep my little ones and other general people away from them. Seems like even the big dollars ones can be broken into with a grinder and some time. My budget is roughly 1500-1000

I’m looking for a 30+ that is kind of middle of the road. I see a bunch of people with the ol’ TSC Winchester safes and they are on sale right now but it seems to be a hit or miss on the keypad having issues. One of the things I DO like about the Winchester is the backup key if the pad goes bad, which I guess would make it less secure but seems like liberty doesn’t have them.

Next safe I was looking at liberty ssfes. As much as I don’t agree with their business practice I do like that they are made in the US and seem to fall into my price range. I’ve read mixed reviews on their lower end stuff and not having a backup key is iffy if the lock fails but I would hope their pads would be better quality that this isn’t an issue.

thank you in advance

I have a couple box store "safes", purchased over the last decade or so as my collection expanded. I like having the backup key for the keypad if it fails or the battery goes dead. I keep them hidden separately but close in case of emergency. You could always get a dial lock, but that will eat into your budget.

You're correct that they wont stop somebody who knows what they are doing. But they'll stop your kids/their friends unscrupulous contractors in your home, and the average smash and grab criminal. Best you can do is bolt them down and make them hard to tip over so Johnny Meth Mouth cant grab them with the uhaul dolly he stole and wheel your stuff out.

Mine are in the basement, bolted through the subfloor into the concrete and again to wall behind them (have to add a hole for this). They're not on display but in a basically unfinished with a locked door where only our family would go (think storage room).

Would it be nice to have a big ol Graffunder on display in the family room? Yes. Is it practical for 90% of hunters/shooters? No.

I have had a Winchester for years and never had an issue. It seemed middle of the road quality wise when I was looking

Ive had a large safe for many years.
It has a dial combo lock and I wouldnt want to have an electronic lock.
I have a small safe with an electronic lock and I hardly use it due the battery usage

I have a Winchester about that size. I think it might be a 26 (barely fits my 9 long guns by the way). I was worried about the keypad, but haven't had any issues. The battery died once but as soon as I replaced the battery it went right back to working without having the change the code.

Costco had some generic gun safes you could order off their website few years back and we got one and really like it. 50 gun safe with a keypad.

It’s super basic with not a very plushy fit and finish on the inside. compared to the really small gun safe we had that was name brand, but that’s what we were looking for was something to get the job done with a light budget. And it checked all those boxes.

If you're looking for a security cabinet and not a "fire rated" safe, check out SecureIt. I have a couple of their Agile safes and they are great for modular secure storage. They are shipped flat and you assemble them, which makes them easy to handle when you re-arrange within your home or when you move. I just replace the 9V battery once a year and they have been trouble free. There is a backup key as well if the electronics were to fail. Mine have an older Gen 2 style of keypad but the Gen 3 ones they sell now have a back-lit keypad and optional biometrics. @sndmn11 has a review of the Agile safe and new keypad on here if you search for it.

I think you are taking the right approach, sucks, but you aren't getting a lot of real security for your money and virtually no fireproofing. That 30 gun safe is maybe a 10 gun safe, just remember that. I have a couple "safes", the one with an electric lock I have a spot planned where I can cut into it when the lock fails and I need a gun ASAP.

There are a few things to consider.

I've seen dozens burn up in homes. Nothing survived in any of them.

Buy a safe two times larger than you think you need. Every single person that has not, that asked my opinion, either regretted not buying a larger safe or were happy they did.

Thank you all for the replies I know budget wise it kind of limits my quality. Scheels has their liberty USA model on sale right which is slightly higher than my budget but might be able to pinch a couple more dollars out to get something that will be better.

TSC has some liberty revere safes on sale right now that are right around my price range a 62 and a 52/54 size. It just seems like the liberty ones built for TS aren’t the same quality wise of getting it at another place.

Torn between spending bigger bucks for a potentially better safe or saving and getting a good enough Winchester that may or may not have issues with a backup key. I’m not delusional that a Winchester won’t be the best most secure safe in the world but I want to get my stuff more secured especially with my little ones starting to get older.

I’m in Co springs so we have Sportsman, BP, and scheels all close by so checking out their inventory is always good. SW has their liberty line for about 1500 with a little Mil discount on top. I just don’t know if those are the same quality of say a TSC liberty which is bigger and cheaper at the moment.

I'm on my third Liberty. I just keep needing more space. The only issue I had was on the second one, after lots of entries the spin dial was giving me some problems getting access, I solved that problem by switch to digital lock. Get one with a high fire rating.

I need to move 2 of mine in the next couple years. I think I'll remove all the insulation from them (just drywall) to make the move easier and just leave it out.
