Based on some feedback from you guys I sought out a hiking brand vs a hunting brand. I picked up a North Face Venture at a good (last season) price. Dark color, good fit, but loud crinkle noise. I still have time to send it back...

To the guys that are paying $250+ for a sitka, kuiu, FL high end hunting rain jacket, is it actually quite or does the high end stuff still have the noise?

Obviously you would shed it in a downpour if you where closing the gap on a spot and stalk. But if you are stationary and an animal approaches I cant imagine you are going to get to draw with this coat because of the noise.

The first lite and kuiu stuff is loud too. Maybe not as loud as some but its not something you are going to wear on a stalk imo. Just have to hope that the rain is loud enough to cover the noise. Usually it is.

I've been using the Sitka Cloudburst for several years now and it has performed very well. But it does have a slim cut.

I don't worry about the noise too musc because if I'm wearing it it's raining pretty hard so there is a lot of ambient noise to cover what little, if any, noise I'm making.

Core 4 torrent/Sylo for me. Quiet, light, compact, durable, useful features. Jacket and pants fold into their own zipped pockets, small enough for a cargo pants pocket, each weight about 1#. So I always have my torrent jacket w me scouting, fishing, early season hunting. Jacket is a very good every day morning outer layer for Sept in CO. As the day warms, it goes in my pack where torrent pants are. Then if monsoon rains hit in the afternoon, I put it back on. I rarely wear the rain pants. I should have put them on last Sept. Rain and hail for 2 hours each of 3 Sept afternoons. MY DWR Sitka ascent pants were soaked, but I stayed dry under the Torrent jacket. Core4 and Sylo are often on Camofire.

I quit worring about rain gear making noise along time ago. I've had both noisy and quiet and never had an elk react one way or another to it. The biggest problem I've had with quiet stuff is water migrating up the sleeves and soaking in the material in general adding weight to it. Unless your going on a pack hunt, I take up to 3 sets of rain clothes with me,1 to wear, 1 to dry and 1 to put on when the 1 I'm wearing gets wet on the inside from sweating.

I was going to say, REI had some stuff on sale last weekend. 25% off any clothing items on clearance. I went in for a rain jacket(didn't buy one) and walked out after spending $60 total...on a down vest and a down jacket. REI brand and Maroon, but $60 for two pieces of down. If you go online to REI you can probably still find some good clearance items. Just not the 25% off of that anymore.

Edit. Online you can get 20% off a garage sale item until April 10
Edit #2. Just picked up a Marmot Precip for $55.

I think there is enough noise in the woods during a downpour that would cause me to put on my shell. I spent $250 on a dryQ elite shell that was marked down 50% 4 years ago. It is my go to skiing, fishing, hiking, biking, etc... shell jacket. Anytime I want water to stay off me that's the jacket I wear. Been trying to find the same thing in coyote or foliage since hotrod red isn't a great hunting color.

The Core4 and Sylo jackets are quiet and comfy, but the outer fabric dries slow. The outer fabric gets wet and heavy, and then actually can make you colder. I love it for early season when it is just showery, but later in the year a shell is likely better. They are cut generously compared to some of the athletic cut jackets.

I've had really good luck in rain and snow with a jacket from Kings Camo. It packs down tiny, and the outside is soft, like a really thin fleece. I don't recall the name of the model, but it is quiet, so I can use it for a general wind breaker when spotting (or napping, let's be honest here) and it keeps me dry in the rain.
As everyone has said, rain makes noise, and obscures vision, so anything earth tone that fits well and sheds water will work fine there. My line of thought is why pack a jacket that is only good for rain? I prefer to multi-task anything that I can.

Side note, Kuiu Teton rain jacket is super easy to compact, but I thought it was a joke when I opened the package. It is SUPER thin. I understand that some people swear by it, but I can't imagine taking on any oak brush or alders in it.

I wear cheaper stuff because most of the time I use it is to keep warm versus actually dry, my FL Guide Pants have DWR treatment and I found I stayed dry enough on the bottom end with them, my wife has the Sylo Gear rain suit and I think mine is Rocky's Brand, lots of guy's use Cabelas Space Suit and swear by it. It doesn't rain all that much are usually all that long in Colorado in September with a few notable exceptions. You need something, biggest advantage to the high end stuff would be weight.

I have the Cabela's packable or whatever its called. I only use the jacket but pack the pants to carry with me. They're lite and pack small, pants are a pain to put on. after I've been caught in a major storm I'll upgrade.

I posted this on a discussion of gaiters... The first part of the Colorado season is usually really dry (and getting drier). I always have rain gear in my pack and have had to put it on a few times (over 20+ years of hunting here), but not very often. Rainstorms usually blow over pretty quickly and I often sit them out under a dense evergreen (not a lone or the tallest evergreen! We have some of the highest number of lightning strikes in the country, especially at high elevations). The last week of the season (3rd week of September) we'll sometimes get a drenching rain, turning to sleet, turning to snow... that's when the rain gear comes out, and I always have pac-boots at base camp, if it really snows. So... I would look for something lightweight and packable, I would definitely bring rain pants (getting soaked through in the mountains can be dangerous), I wouldn't worry about color because your not likely to spend a lot of time wearing it (I would avoid black though... black stands out pretty much against any background), and large enough to fit over whatever else you're wearing, including cold weather gear if it does get cold. My two cents.

Look at the kryptek Poseidon, no it isn't the most breathable but it is light and durable and usually you can find a good sale price. Chances are you won't use the rain gear. I usually just get wet but end up drying out by days end as most rain storms are not an all day event.

Do you know the weight of the jacket? Under 10oz?

Beat me to it. If it's raining, sleeting, or snowing enough to were you need to put on a waterproof shell, the noise the rain gear makes doesn't make much of a difference
