I've been a gun hunter all my life. Either a 30-30 or muzzleloader. I've also pretty much hunted the same unit since the 50's. It's not much of a challenge anymore. I want to try something new. This is something I was going to do a couple of years ago, but didn't do.

So, since I don't camp anymore. I have to pick a unit that's close to me. I picked unit 55. It will be more of a challenge, because it's pretty crowded and i've never hunted it. It's only a 40 min drive, so driving back and forth won't be bad. I also want to use a different weapon. My bad shoulder won't let me pull a bow. I tried. So, i'm going to use a crossbow. I have a disability license that will let me use an xbow in archery season. I know kind of lame, but it's all I can do. Being 74 is a big enough handicap when hunting for elk solo.

This will be similar to a non-resident coming here to hunt a unit he's never hunted before. Let's see if I can figure it out. The longer bow season will help. I'll probably just scout the first few days. I've never had an eihter sex tag, so that will be new. Getting the bull meat out is hard at my age, so I might look for a cow, but a bull in my sights will be hard to resist. Well see how it goes.

That's the plan. The tag is guaranteed. Last year 286 hunters got the tag as a 2nd pick with no points. I'll be applying for a 1st pick. No way to fail.

Maybe i'll even break down and take pictures.

Congratulations for being able to be out there and especially to being able to try something new. I think that you should be excited to be taking a new opportunity. Definitely some learning to do as you will have to get a lot closer with a cross bow but you should be able to hit it hard during the rut. Good luck in your new adventures!

Good luck, Bar! I think a crossbow hunt would be a lot of fun. I've never shot one but have considered it for a future hunt.

I'm sure a quick post on here would land you plenty of help to pack out meat if needed.

Good luck, only suggestion I have from watching my dad hunt with his xbow is to practicing stalking and shooting. It's much more difficult to maneuver than you think. Also, it's heavier than a typical lever gun. He also had a learning curve stalking with the xbow because it's wide instead of tall. I'm sure with all your experience you'll be way ahead of most hunters.
