Obviously won't be to their standards. Simple db meter at different points. Down range, shooters ear, beside firearm. Even a cheap meter will show differences in db. We use some at work to determine construction noise thresholds. My results will hold 0 water in the industry, only in my book and whoever else thinks they show value.
I’m an industrial hygienist for work. The issue with using occupational exposure tools for very fast impulse noise like this is that they are designed for tracking noise in an occupational setting. Even sound level meter units with an impulse noise setting aren’t fast enough to allow for a good apples to apples comparison from one suppressor to another when peaks are as high in amplitude and short in duration like a gun shot. They will however allow you to get a pretty good idea of what your average noise exposure is throughout an entire range session.
