Maybe you should buy a New Mexico license plate for your vehicle while parked at camp. I think that might help.

I've thought about this before and I wonder if it's legal as long as the vehicle isn't moving? Probably not, but I actually met a guy who would do this in Wyoming while on fishing trips. He had these fake Wyoming Plates that hooked on over his Colorado Plates because he came back to his truck once at a Forest Service Trailhead and his gas cap was gone, his wiper blades peeled down to the metal and some other minor vandalism that insinuated that he wasn't welcome there.

I wouldn’t worry about it. No police at trailheads and if they did say anything I think telling the truth should make them understand.

I tend to back my vehicle in at places I hunt/fish to hide the plate, I removed the front, while in New Mexico I have a fly fish New Mexico "plate" on the front.

I’ve read a few posts and heard from a few different people that have had their camps broken into while hunting in Northern NM. Gear stolen, truck windows smashed and ransacked, all kinds of horror stories. I’m sure most people are good folks and would just pass a camp by, but if truck camping and heading out every morning how do you keep your camp safe while you are away?

When I lived in Durango it was well known meth was skyrocketing in N NM.

If group dynamics allowed for it and your stay was long enough, I suppose you could rotate through one guy staying back to relax, smoke his pipe, and prep a big dinner.

But if a tweaker gets it in their head to mess with an empty camp, I don’t reckon much will deter them. That sucks...
