Hey guys: does new mexico do a separate draw for each species or do they do it solely on one draw? For example--if one was to put in for elk and mule deer and were picked..would they more than likely get both tags? Or would the elk draw be separate from a different species draw? Thanks!

ArcherAdam,

The draw in New Mexico will be separate for all species. Great thing about New Mexico is there is no point system. You got the same opportunities at the next fella for drawing. Although if you apply with an outfitter the odds get a smidge better for a nonresident.

So when did the non refundable $65 fee to apply become a thing? I'm generally about as down as they come to spend money on licenses etc but it is just tough to spend that every year on a single digits percentage chance of success... really considering getting into NV bonus points instead. At least you get something there in the overwhelmingly likely case you aren't drawn.

Last year

I hunt 1st Archery and there are some 330+ bull units with 30-40% odds

My big interest would be doing a blackpowder hunt in probably one of the 16s or 17. Still a decent hunt, but higher than the heart of the Gila units with 1 or 2% draw odds. But yeah. 8 or 9% draw odds are still a long shot to be throwing them a total of $80 a year... statistically speaking, that's almost a grand extra in addition to the tag fee by the average time you'd draw. Long odds.

The odds aren't great for the best tags, but everyone has the same odds!

Been applying for elk in good units for 9 years. Having drawn yet, hoping for this year.

Might want to do some math on what NV costs every year and what your draw odds will be. Hint, it costs more and in 10 years your odds will probably be lower than your odds in NM are right now.

Nevada is the most expensive state I apply in for the ROI... I’m hopeful that someday I draw one tag for deer and elk in that state. I’m in for NM!

I keep hearing that NM changed the rules on what units can have non resident tags. Ie if 6% of the tags in a unit does not equal 1, then no non residents can draw as opposed to 6% of all specie tags. I cant find anything on the game and fish website about this change. Has anyone seen it somewhere?

My understanding is that it's not a new rule but rather an enforcement of something that is already there...meaning the actual 6% allocation and not rounding up.

I've already put in for the units I'd like to draw, but I was on gohunt for the first time since they updated the 2019 data, and man did some of the odds really change for nonresident. It looks like a big jump on applications in several units and not just the well known ones. one of the units i put in for dropped 9% in odds. Same amount of tags, just that many more apps. Really puts the squash on my hopes of drawing.
