New here, 300wm scope suggestion

It depends on your use.

Turrets that track correctly and accurately are rare these days outside of top end Japanese and German/Austrian companies. Nightforce is the mostly 99.99 percent answer for the cheapest solution. Glass is at least as good as your Z3.

If just want to set up a rifle for MPBR maximum point blank range, generally under 300 yards. Then tracking doesn't matter.

If you are shooting a Christmas tree reticle, then racking doesn't matter.

I tried to train my 84 year old father to use a Christmas tree turret, it didn't work.

Some days I’m high on the Fudd spectrum some days low but I understand the Christmas tree. The 308 I have is more for the MPBR I’d like to use the 300 to learn to get some distance and build confidence in my shot. So accurate tracking is something I’m looking for

I'm a Swarovski fanboy and each of my .300 Wms have worn Swaros. I'm still in that camp but I have gotten into several Mavens lately. Glass is not Swaro glass, but it does everything that a scope should do. I still use Swarovski binoculars for detail. I like the reticle in the Maven better than most of the other options as they get too busy for my eyes to focus quickly on. They dial and repeat very well.

Many of my clients (and I) have had issues with both Leupold and Vortex. Leupold warranty is sometimes great and other times hit or miss. Vortex has a great warranty, no matter how many times you use it.

The few Swarovski and Maven scopes/binos that had issues were dealt with very quickly and satisfactorily.

Dude, I can rock my own Elmer Fudd spectrum pretty hard without even really trying. I am still shooting an 8x57 and a 9,3x64 Brenneke for most hunting.

The 300 Winchester with the right barrel (a 1 in 10 or 1 in 9) and 180-220 grain Very Low Drag (VLD) bullets will give you quite a bit of range over a 308, with better wind calls.

However, it is more recoil and harder to shoot because of it.

My last 300 worked very well with Barnes X 150's out of a 26 inch barrel. I didn't have a chronograph at the time, I think I was in the 3200-3400 FPS range.

I have a Nightforce NX8 4x32 on my 300WM that I love. I’ve taken a few falls on it in some steep snowy mountains and it’s never lost zero. Great optic.

I honestly don't think the 300 Winchester is fast enough to use the 180 Grain Barnes X bullet. Monometal bullets rely on speed to have good deformation to kill things.

My x bolt 300wm has a 1 in 8 twist. Shoots 165 ttsx very well. About 3150 fps. I had a leupold vx6 on it but switching to a nightforce shv with a ballistic reticle. I think the ballistic reticle is much faster to shoot, especially a flat shooter. I would say the glass is similar in both scopes

I like the Barnes quite a bit, the Barnes 165g would be worth a try then?

The cartridge can push it plenty fast. The problem is the BC is terrible for long range work. A 175LRX would be a better choice is you have to shoot Barnes monos and shoot long distance.

No. Sorry. I didnt try thie 180s. Or ever shoot a 1 in 10 twist 300 wm. I shot 200 gr terminal ascents that grouped pretty well. The 165 ttsx were better. Might be worth a try for the 180s. The 165 did great on a cow elk at 340 yards

I’ve got a Browning Xbolt Stalker 300wm 10” twist. So far I’ve only tried 180 grain TTSX but they shoot extremely well, chrono 2966-2995 fps. Just shot my first whitetail with it but it was at 7 yards so I cannot attest to long range performance. I’ve got a Zeiss Conquest V4, no complaints so far.

With that said I handload and the 180 TTSX at under max published book velocity carries more than enough velocity for expansion out to 500 or 600 or even 700 yards depending on the elevation where you hunt.

High probability I won’t be taking shots over 500 for a kill. I would like to get comfortable or at least have the know how to double that at the range. Hunts will be from 5500-8000ft altitude, mostly between 6 & 7. At the range about 5000ft altitude

You already know the answer, buy another swaro with turrets and be done with it. You are looking through excellent glass and are used to it. The only other option would be the high end Zeiss, not the cheaper conquests (sorry conquest guys/gals) or an S&B. You know what your eyes like, I sure know what mine like, I have a diavari on one gun, my primary, and Z6's on three others. The only three that have cheaper glass are a .243, a 6mm Remington and a muzzle loader. (Guess which ones don't get used very much)

That's a lot of elevation on that 300wm, 23.5 for 500 and 210.5 for 1,000 by my ballistic chart for a 180gr. norma bondstrike. Have fun. by the way, I'm zeroed at 300, 3" high at 100. I'm not a long range shooter.
