New here. Didn't grow up around guns, aside from the occasional BSA trip to trap and skeet. Didn't grow up hunting. found a love of guns around 17-18 and have never looked back.
Currently debating building out my 270win or getting a 6.5cm.
I'd love to hunt anything from deer, coyote, elk, black beer, etc. My dream hunt is a Bighorn Sheep, although my wife says that's not cool enough.

Can't wait to learn from all the experienced members here!

If not a trust-funder or have married well or won the lottery or have a rich but childless uncle unfortunately entering hospice this week then might merely be a dream to scratch a big check to pick up a bighorn tag for next year.

The regular state draws for bighorn sheep have very low odds to draw. As do mountain goat and moose and bison. More so if are a non-resident entering draws in applicable states.

As for draws, residents have the better odds by far so you are in the race by living in Arizona as seek a bighorn sheep and bison. Your lifetime odds as a resident applying every year (bison has two draws a year) for the rest of your life is likely under 5% on bighorn and under 10% on bison in AZ. As a resident.

Those are likely your best odds of drawing a sheep or bison tag since once your get into draws as a non-resident then two things are certain: (1) the cost to apply each year and the tag cost if you draw will outrun general price inflation and (2) non-residents will see a smaller percentage of tags over time in most states.

I can not think of a single state out West where non-residents have not been bent over so do some research and look into the state-run lottery tags as you may find better odds each year than in the non-resident regular draw.

Generally, the more primitive the weapon season then the better your odds to get drawn.

Since you are happy hunting then will draw plenty of tags over the years though may mostly be for deer, pronghorn (Wyoming has decent odds after build points for two or three years), black bear, javelina and vermin. Decent quail hunting in parts of Arizona. You can scratch a lot of itches with those hunts.

Good to know! Thanks for all the info. I honestly hadn’t even thought of applying for the draw in other states.
I was just going to put in here in AZ every year.

Again, thank you for the info!
